Ch-6 RD Maths

This document discusses trigonometric identities. It begins by defining a trigonometric identity as an equation involving trigonometric ratios of an angle that is satisfied for all values of the angle for which the ratios are defined. Several fundamental identities are then proven, including: (1) sin2θ + cos2θ = 1, which is proven using cases for θ = 0°, 90°, and an acute angle. (2) sec2θ = 1 + tan2θ, which is proven using the Pythagorean theorem in a right triangle. (3) cosec2θ = 1 + cot2θ, which is also proven using the Pythagorean theorem. Finally,

TRIGONOMETRIC IDENTITIES

6.1 INTRODUCTION
In the previous chapter, we have learnt about various trigonometric ratios and relations
betweenthem. In thischapter, we willprovesome trigonometric identities, and usethem to
prove other useful trigonometric identities.

6.2 TRIGONOMETRIC IDENTITIES

We know that an equation is called an identity if it is true for all values of the variable (s)
involved. Forexample,

xz - s= (x - 3)(x + 3)' and

tl -'l-\' - !! * ? - a=!\x - c! *(L -'!\.!' o! = 1
(c-a)(c-b) (a-b)(a-c) (b-c)(b-a)
are algebraic identities as they are satisfied by every value of the variable x.
In this section, we will discuss some trigonometric identities. We may define the term
trigonometric identity as follows.
DEFINITION An equation inaoloing trigonometric ratios of an angle 0 (safl is saiil to be a
trigonometric identity if it is satisfiedfor alloalues of 0 for which the gioen trigonometric ratios nre
defined.

For example, cos2 e - 1.* o = cos e(.*, - i is a trigonometric identity, whereas

which cos 0 = 0" For cos 0 = 0, sec 0 is not defined.
Inthis section, we shall establish some fundamental trigonometric identities and use them
to obtain some more identities.
