UCH712 (Distillation Processes) Tutorial-1

This document contains 4 questions regarding distillation processes. Question 1 involves determining the fraction of feed vaporized and composition of distillate for a differential distillation process. Question 2 involves calculating minimum reflux ratio, plates, and plates at double reflux for continuous fractionation of a binary mixture. Question 3 similarly calculates minimum and double minimum plates for another continuous fractionation. Question 4 determines the number of plates at double minimum reflux and total reflux, both analytically and graphically, for a distillation separation problem.

UCH712 (Distillation Processes)

Tutorial- 1
Dr. Neetu Singh

Q-1 A mixture of n-heptane and n-octane containing 40 mol% n-heptane is differentially

distilled so that a residue containing 30 mol% n-heptane remains in the still. If an average α
value of 2.16 can be used to represent the equilibrium, determine the fraction of feed vaporized
and the composition of distillate.

Q-2 An equimolar mixture of chloroform (CHCl3) and carbon disulphide (CS2) is to be

continuously fractionated at 101.3 kPa into a distillate containing 95 mol% CS2 and a residue
of 3 mol% CS2. The feed is 30 mol% vapour before entering the tower. A total condenser is
used. Determine
(a) Minimum reflux ratio.
(b) Minimum number of theoretical plates.
(c) The number of theoretical plates at a reflux ratio twice the minimum.
Equilibrium data (mole fraction CS2) are:
x 0 0.029 0.062 0.111 0.143 0.258 0.391 0.532 0.663 0.757 0.860 1
y 0 0.082 0.155 0.266 0.333 0.495 0.634 0.747 0.829 0.878 0.932 1

Q-3 A saturated feed containing 40 mol% chloroform and 60 mol% benzene is to be separated
continuously. The distillate should contain 95 mol% chloroform and residue not more than 5
mol% chloroform. The column is provided with a total condense and partial reboiler. The
vapour-liquid equilibrium data for the system benzene-chloroform is represented by the
following equation 𝑦 = 1.29 𝑥 + 0.25 𝑥 − 0.54 𝑥
Where 𝑥 and 𝑦 are the mole fractions of chloroform in liquid and vapour phases respectively.
Calculate: (a) The minimum number of trays for this separation.
(b) The actual number of trays if the reflux ratio is twice the minimum.

Q-4 It is desired to fractionate a given mixture of a binary volatile liquid with an initial
composition 30 mol% A into an overhead product containing 97 mol% A. Loss of A in the
bottom should not be more than 5% of that entering the system. Take the relative volatility of
the system to be 4.8. If the feed is cold liquid requiring 0.1 kmol additional condensation per
mole of feed at the feed plate, and if a total condenser is employed determine:
(a) The number of theoretical plates at twice the minimum reflux.
(b) The number of plates under total reflux (i) analytically (ii) graphically
