Tutorial Sheet 2

This document contains 8 questions involving solving partial differential equations (PDEs). Question 1 asks to solve a PDE involving addition and subtraction of terms with variables x, y, and z. Question 2 asks to solve another similar PDE. Question 3 asks to solve a PDE involving trigonometric functions of x and y. The remaining questions involve finding integral surfaces, orthogonal surfaces, reducing PDEs to Clairaut form, and complete integrals of given PDEs.

Q.1 Solve (3𝑥 + 𝑦 − 𝑧)𝑝 + (𝑥 + 𝑦 − 𝑧)q = 2(z − y).

Q. 2 Solve (𝑦 + 𝑧𝑥)𝑝 − (𝑥 + 𝑦𝑧)q = y 2 − x 2 .
Q.3 Solve cos(𝑥 + 𝑦)𝑝 + sin(𝑥 + 𝑦)𝑞 = 𝑧.

Q.4 Solve 𝑥 𝑝 + y q = z − a√𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 𝑧 2 .

Q.5 Find the integral surface of the linear Partial differential equations
𝑥(𝑦 2 + 𝑧)𝑝 − 𝑦(𝑥 2 + 𝑧)𝑞 = (𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 )𝑧 which contains the straight line 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 0, 𝑧 = 1.
Q.6 Find the surface which is orthogonal to the one parameter system
𝑧 = 𝐶 𝑥𝑦(𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 ) and which passes through the hyperbola 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 = 𝑎2 , 𝑧 = 0.
Q.7 Using a transformation, reduce the partial differential equation, 𝑦 + 2𝑧𝑞 = 𝑞(4𝑥𝑝 + 𝑦𝑞)
To Clairauts form and hence find its complete integral.
Q.8 Find the complete integrals of the following PDEs
(i) (𝑝2 + 𝑞 2 )𝑥 = 𝑝𝑧 (ii) 𝑝𝑥 + 𝑞𝑦 + 𝑧 = 𝑥𝑞 2 .
