TYPES OF SPEECH AND SPEECH STYLE
A person may be good in writing but not in speaking. Some are afraid to speak
in public. Public speaking requires courage as writing a speech requires skill. Both
need careful preparation for the speech to be substantial and to be properly delivered.
A speech plays a n important role in communication because it helps form
connections, motivates change, influences decisions, and provides information.
The speech style is another thing to consider. People are different from each
other so it is important that a style in talking or speaking should be considered for
the purpose of effective communication. In other words, the speaker’s style should
complement the speech.

Types of Speech
A. Types of Speech According to Purpose
1. An informative speech provides information about a specific subject to an
audience. The aim of an informative speech is to help the audience
understand and remember the information presented.
2. An entertainment speech is a speech designed to captivate an audience’s
attention and regale or amuse them while delivering a message.
3. A persuasive speech is a specific type of speech in which the speaker has
a goal of convincing the audience to accept his or her point of view. The speech
is arranged in such a way as to hopefully cause the audience to accept all or
part of the expressed view.
B. Types of Speech According to Delivery
1. An extemporaneous speech is the presentation of a carefully planned and
rehearsed speech, spoken in a conversational manner using brief notes. By
using notes rather than a full manuscript, the extemporaneous speaker can
establish and maintain eye contact with the audience and assess how well
they are understanding the speech as it progresses. The opportunity to assess
is also an opportunity to restate more clearly any idea or concept that the
audience seems to have trouble grasping.
2. A manuscript speech is the word-for-word iteration of a written message.
In a manuscript speech, the speaker maintains his or her attention on the
printed page except when using visual aids. The advantage of reading from a
manuscript is the exact repetition of original words.
3. A memorized speech is the rote recitation of a written message that the
speaker has committed to memory. Actors, of course, recite from memory
whenever they perform from a script in a stage play, television program, or
movie scene. When it comes to speeches, memorization can be useful when
8
the message needs to be exact and the speaker doesn’t want to be confined
by notes.
4. An impromptu speech is given with little or no preparation, yet almost
always with some advance knowledge on the topic. When called to speak "off
the cuff" on the "spur of the moment," is usually because the speaker is quite
knowledgeable about the subject. For example, if called on to speak in class,
a student might give a short impromptu speech about a topic that was in the
assigned readings.
Types of Speech Style
The context dictates and affects the way people communicate, which results
in various styles. According to Joos {1968}, there are five speech styles. These
are {1} Intimate {2} Casual {3} Consultative {4} Formal, and {5} Frozen.
1. Intimate – This style is private which occurs between or among close
family members or individuals. The language used in this style may not be
shared in public.
Examples: Couple talking about their future plans and family sharing
Ideas
2. Casual - This style is common among peers and friends. Jargon, slang,
or the vernacular languages are used.
Examples:
casual conversations with friends, family members, and phone calls
3. Consultative – This style is the standard one. Professional or mutually
acceptable language is a must.
Examples:
regular conversation at schools, companies, group discussion
teacher-student, doctor-patient, expert-apprentice
4. Formal – This style is used in formal settings. Unlike the consultative
style, this is one-way.
Examples: meetings, speeches, school lessons, court, a corporate
meeting, at a swearing in ceremony, in an interview or in a classroom
5. Frozen – This style is frozen in time and remains unchanged. It is
mostly occurring in ceremonies.
Examples: national pledge, anthem and school creeds
