Let us start this lesson by a short review of the Law of Sines and its application.
The following figure shows the Law of Sines for the triangle ABC
The law of sines states that: B
b

C
The Law of Sines is also known as the sine rule, sine law, or sine formula. It is valid
for all types of triangles: right, acute or obtuse triangles.
The Law of Sines can be used to compute the remaining sides of a triangle:
when two angles and a side are known (AAS or ASA); and
when we are given two sides and a non-included angle (SSA).
What’s New
In the previous activity you assessed your ability to draw triangles given some
conditions. Being able to translate problems into figures or illustrations help you
analyze what law should be used to solve the triangle.
In this activity you will understand how important the figures or illustrations to be
able to solve the given problems or situations.
Activity 2: Solve this One!
Directions: Read and analyze the problem and the partial solution presented below.
Then, answer the questions in the problem on your own.
Problem: Two towns, A and B, located along the coast of the Pacific Ocean are 30
km apart on a north-south line. From a ship, the line of sight of town A is W30 0N,

What is It
In the next activity, you will find how to solve real-life problems using law of sines
but before you proceed to the next activities, read and understand the following note
in solving real-life problems. We are going to see how Law of Sines are used in real-
life problems.
Let us continue the discussion by having a word problem using the Law of Sines.
In the previous activity, you encounter a problem with illustration where in you use
law of sines.
Example A. Two fire-lookout stations are 15 miles apart, with station A directly
east of station B. Both stations spot a fire. The angular direction of the fire from
station B is N52°E and the angular direction of the fire from station A is N36°W.
How far is the fire from station A?

Step 1. Draw and label a picture of the problem.
Step 2. Set up a ratio using the law of sines and the given measurements.

Step 3. Solve the ratio using fundamental rule of proportion and find the answer.

degrees from the vertical. At a distance of 100 meters from the wall of the tower,
the angle of elevation to the top is 30.5 degrees. Use the law of sines to estimate
the height of the leaning tower?
5
Things we need first:
Let us find out angle y and angle z.
Notice that to find 84.5°, you need to subtract 5.5° from 90°.
You also notice that the angle opposite 100 m is unknown, so we need to find it.
So, 180°-(84.5° + 30.5°) = 65° by Sum of the interior angle of a Triangle.
Step 2. Set up a ratio using the law of sines and the given measurements.
sinx sinZ

Step 3. Solve the ratio using fundamental rule of proportion and find the answer.

xsin65° = 100sin(30.5)°
Example C. Manuel observes a car and a tree from a window. The angle of
depression of the car is 45° and that of the tree is 30°. If the distance between
the car and the tree is 100 m. find Manuel’s distance from the tree.
