Keyboard Musicianship placement

All music degrees require at least two semesters of class instruction in Keyboard Musicianship. Your Summer Orientation
session will include a 5-minute placement exam for those classes. If you haven’t already developed strong keyboard skills,
don’t worry, you’ll be placed in Keyboard Musicianship I. Students who have studied piano and/or have some keyboard
background, and who are interested to place out of one or more Keyboard Musicianship courses, should review the
requirements listed below.

For ALL degrees except piano and organ majors:

Keyboard Musicianship I (PFSM 17100)


• All major scales, 2 octaves, hands together, in eighth notes, quarter = 72
• Major arpeggios, hands alone, in eighth notes, quarter = 72
• Major and minor triads and inversions
• Harmonization of simple tunes using I, IV, and V7
• Repertoire equivalent to Beethoven German Dance, Kabalevsky Scherzo
Keyboard Musicianship II (PFSM 17200)
• All major and harmonic minor scales, 2 octaves, hands together, in eighth notes, quarter = 80
• Major and minor arpeggios, 2 octaves, hands alone, in eighth notes quarter = 80
• Chord progression: I - vi – IV - ii6 - I6 - V7 - I in all major and minor keys
• Harmonization using all diatonic triads and secondary dominants
• Accompaniment patterns requiring independence of right and lefthand
• Repertoire equivalent to Bach Minuet in G, Kabalevsky Clowns

Additional classes for voice majors in Music Education and Performance degrees:

Keyboard Musicianship III and IV for Vocal Majors (PFSM 27100-27400)


• All major and harmonic minor scales, 4 octaves, hands together, in sixteenth notes, quarter = 60
• Major and minor arpeggios, 4 octaves, hands together, in sixteenth notes, quarter = 60
• Chord progressions using diatonic chords and secondary dominants
• Harmonization using diatonic and some chromatic harmony
• Appropriate accompaniment patterns required
• Sight read any two parts from open score (vocal SATB, SSA, SSAA, etc.)
• Perform accompaniments for melodies found in basal music series
• Perform America, America the Beautiful, and Star-Spangled Banner to lead group singing
• Repertoire equivalent to Beethoven or Clementi Sonatina

For piano and organ majors only:

Keyboard Musicianship I (PFSM 17500)


• Chord progressions including all diatonic chords, secondary dominants (V7/IV and V7/V), and seventh chords
• Harmonization of a melody with diatonic triads, secondary dominants (V7/IV and V7/V), and seventh chords: chord
symbols provided
• Sight read open score, vocal, 3-4 parts
• Sight read intermediate level piano repertoire and/or vocal accompaniments for German lied /French melodie
• Transposition of a single line up to a M3 in either direction
• Improvisation of a consequent phrase to a given antecedent phrase
Keyboard Musicianship II (PFSM 17600)
• Chord progressions including additional secondary dominants and chromatic harmony including the Neapolitan and
augmented sixth chords
• Harmonization of a melody using secondary dominants and chromatic harmony: chord symbols provided
• Sight read an instrumental open score, including alto and tenor clefs and/or transposing instruments
• Transposition of a single line to at least the interval of a fourth in either direction
• Figured bass realization using diatonic harmony
• Improvisation using variation technique, altering the musical style, mode, and/or meter of a given 8-measure phrase
