Structural analysis – II

Max. Marks:100
1. SECTION-A, Question 1-5 carry 10 Marks.
2. SECTION-B, Question 6-15 carries 30 Marks.
3. SECTION-C, Question 16-20 carries 12 Marks.

SECTION – A

Q-1 Explain briefly about characteristic strength of concrete.

Ans:
Characteristic strength of a concrete is the strength below which not more than
5% of sample should fail when testing is done.
Example: For M25 concrete if 100 cubes are casted and tested on 28 days, then
more than 95 cubes will pass the 25 N/mm2 mark

Q-2 What are the assumptions made in the design of limit state?
Ans:

1. Plane sections normal to the axis before bending remain plane after bending.
2. Tensile strength of concrete is ignored (since it is negligible)
3. The maximum strain in concrete at the outermost compression fibre is taken as
0.0035 in bending.
4. Maximum strain in the tension reinforcement in the section at failure shall not be
less.
5. There is a perfect bond between steel and concrete.
6. The stresses in a particular reinforcement are derived from stress strain curve for that
particular type of steel used.

Q-3 Draw stress-strain curve of steel bars with and without definite yield point and
indicate the yield stress fy of them.

Q-4 Define characteristic strength fck of concrete.

Q-5 State principle of Working Stress Method.

Ans :
Working stress method assumes concrete as a linear elastic material and steel
bars and concrete act together elastically. This method is designated as working
stress method because the loads for design of structures are service or the
working loads the failure of structure occurs at much higher load. The stress in
concrete and steel are not allowed to exceed some specified values of stresses
known as permissible stresses

SECTION – B

Q-6 Describe the salient features of “Working stress Design Philosophy” and “Limit
State Design Philosophy”.

Q-7 Determine the area of tension reinforcement required for a singly reinforced beam
section of size 300 x 600 mm (overall) to carry a factored moment of 175 kN.m.
Use M-20 and Fe-415. Also show the detailing of reinforcement in cross section of
beam.

Ans:
Given: D =600mm, b=300mm, fck = 20N/mm^2, fy =415N/mm^2, Mu = 175 kN.m
Limiting Moment for Fe415
d=600-40 = 560 mm

Mulim = 0.138•fck•b•d^2
=0.138•20•300•560^2
= 259.66 kN.m> 175 kN.m
Hence Mu,lim>Mu
The section is Under Reinforced

Ast •fy
Mu=0.87 • fy • Ast •d •(1− )
b •d •fck
Ast • 415
(
175 •10^6 = 0.87 • 415 • Ast •560 • 1−
300 •560 • 20 )
Solving for Ast we get
Ast = 985 mm2

Use #5 No of 16mm dia bars as shown ,

Were Xumax/d = 0.48 for Fe415

reinforced E rectangular beam section and wrrite the formula to calculate the
moment of resistance of the same. Also describe each and every term used in the
formula.

300 x 600 mm overall. The beam is reinforced with 4 bars of 25 mm diameter on
tension side at an effective cover of 50 mm. Two nominal hanger bars of 12 mm
diameter are provided on the compression side. The beam is subjected to a service
moment of 140 kN.m at the centre of span section. Use M-20 and Fe-415 and check
the beam for the serviceability of deflections using theoretical method as per IS 456
:2000.

span of slab as 4.16 m.
Design the slab and show the reinforcement detail in plan and section.

thickness of drop = 200 mm column head diameter = 1.5 m, Drop width = 3m. The
slab is subjected to total ultimate bending moment (MJ = 230 kN.m. Distribute the
moments in column and middle strips and show them in neat plan.

Q-12 Derive an expression for developmental length of bars in tension- 7M.

Q-13 A reinforced concrete beam of M 20 grade concrete, 300 mm wide required to

resist a super-imposed moment of 152kN-m at an intermediate continuous beam.
Using mild steel bars, calculate Ast at top, if 4 number are required to be continued
at bottom from one span to the other. Assume to compression steel as 45 mm and
that to the tension steel as 50 mm.

Q-14 Determine and provide the longitudinal reinforcement and lateral ties in a column
of size 550 x 425 mm. Also check the column for minimum eccentricity if the
unsupported length of column is 3m. Use M-20 and Fe-415. The column is
subjected to ultimate axial load of 2500 kN.

Ans:
Given: b=425 mm, d= 550mm, leff= 3000mm , fck = 20N/mm2, fy= 415N/mm2

Pu=0.4 •fck • Ag+ ( 0.67 fy−0.4 fck ) • Asc

2500 •103=0.4 •20 • 425• 550+ ( 0.67 • 415−0.4 • 20 ) Asc
Solving for Asc we Get, Asc = 2332.9 mm2

Ans: Given : b=200mm, D=400mm, Pu= 1200kN, Mu=200kN.m, fck=20N/mm2,

fy=415kN/mm2

Step1: Check for Minimum Eccentricity

Mu 200
e x= = =0.1667 m=166.7 mm
