PERFORMANCE TASK: (10 points)
Cite a real-life situation (word problem) applying Riemann Sums with complete
solution and graph.

Suppose that you want to know how far your friend’s tricycle can go from a certain time to
another. Now you can check you speed at regular intervals. Say, every hour.
For the first hour, the tricycle’s speed is at 40 km/h. The second hour, 63 km/h. Third hour, 51
km/h. Fourth hour, 53 km/h and in fifth hour is 48 km/h. Now, how many kilometers did the
tricycle go for 5 hours?

USING THE LEFT-HAND RULE:

1st rectangle = 40 units2
2nd rectangle = 63 units2
3rd rectangle = 51 units2
4th rectangle = 53 units2
5th rectangle = 48 units2
Then adding up, 40+63+51+53+48 = 255 units2

USING THE RIGHT-HAND RULE:

1st rectangle = 40 units2
2nd rectangle = 51 units2
3rd rectangle = 51 units2
4th rectangle = 53 units2
5th rectangle = 45 units2
Then adding up, 40+51+51+53+45 = 240 units2

USING THE MIDPOINT RULE:

1st rectangle = 40 units2
2nd rectangle = 58 units2
3rd rectangle = 51 units2
4th rectangle = 49 units2
5th rectangle = 46 units2
Then adding up, 40+58+51+49+46= 244 units2

Therefore, we can assume that the tricycle reached 255 kilometers, 240 kilometers or 244 kilometers for 5
hours.
