1. (c.f. Conway p. 104 # 16)

(a) Show that if M is a closed subspace of the topological vector space X , then
the natural map π : X → X /M is a continuous and open map, where X /M
is given the quotient topology (i.e., Ũ ⊆ X /M is open in X /M if and only if
π −1 (Ũ ) is open in X ). Recall X /M is a vector space. Show that the quotient
topology on X /M makes X /M into a topological vector space.
(b) Let X , M, be as in the first part. If p is a seminorm on X , show that

p̃(x + M) = inf{p(x + m) : m ∈ M}

is a seminorm on X /M.

2. (a) Let S be the Schwartz space defined in lectures. Prove that xk e−x ∈ S for
every integer k ≥ 0.
(b) Recall that for each n ∈ N ∪ {0} there is norm pn defined on S by

pn (f ) = supx∈R max0≤i,j≤n |xj f (i) (x)|.

Show given the topology S induced by the norms pn , the differentiation map
D : S → S given by D(f ) = f 0 is continuous.
3. X be the real Hilbert space L2 [0, 1]. For α ∈ R, let Xα be the subset of X consisting
of all continuous real-valued functions f : [0, 1] → R such that f (1/2) = α. Prove
that each Xα is convex, and each is norm dense in X . Deduce that for α, β ∈ R
with α 6= β, the sets Xα and Xβ are disjoint convex sets of L2 [0, 1] which cannot
be separated by any continuous linear functional on X .
4. Do problems 7 and 9 on page 104, problem 4 (a), (b), (c), (f) on p. 107, and
problem 4 (b) p. 113 of the Conway textbook.
