The AMPL system is a sophisticated modeling tool that supports the
entire optimization modeling lifecycle: development, testing, deployment,
and maintenance.
By using a high-level representation that represents optimization models
in the same ways that people think about them, AMPL promotes rapid
development and reliable results.
AMPL integrates a modeling language for describing optimization data,
variables, objectives, and constraints; a command language for browsing
models and analyzing results; and a scripting language for gathering and
manipulating data and for implementing iterative optimization schemes.
All use the same concepts and syntax for streamlined application-
building.

Powerful modeling language features

 Broad support for sets and set operators. AMPL models can use
sets of pairs, triples, and longer tuples; collections of sets indexed
over sets; unordered, ordered, and circular sets of objects; and sets of
numbers.
 General and natural syntax for arithmetic, logical, and conditional
expressions; familiar conventions for summations and other iterated
operators.
 Automatic handling of linear and convex quadratic problems in
continuous and integer variables.
 Nonlinear programming features such as initial primal and dual
values, user-defined functions, fast automatic differentiation, and
automatic elimination of “defined” variables.
 Convenient alternative notations for network flows, piecewise-
linearities, complementarity conditions, and logical implications.

 Interactive command environment with batch processing options.


Powerful display commands let you view any model component or
expression, browsing on-screen or writing to a file, using automatic
formatting or your own preferences.

 Powerful scripting language including looping and if-then-else


commands. Programs in the AMPL command language can define
sophisticated iterative schemes that process input data, repeatedly
adjust and solve instances of multiple models, and prepare results for
analysis.

 Separation of model and data. AMPL models remain concise even


as sets and data tables grow. Models may incorporate many kinds of
conditions for validity of the data.

Available solvers include the most popular and powerful
optimization engines:

 Linear and convex quadratic solvers for both continuous and mixed-


integer problems (CPLEX, Gurobi, Xpress).

 Nonlinear solvers for local solution of continuous problems


(CONOPT, KNITRO, MINOS, SNOPT) and mixed-integer problems
(KNITRO).

Hook your own solver to AMPL using our open-source AMPL-solver


library.
Supported platforms include Windows, Linux, MacOS, and several Unix-
based workstations.

Extensive supporting materials

The AMPL book provides a detailed introductory tutorial plus tutorial


introductions to all basic and advanced features.

Numerous examples are available including all models and data from the


AMPL book as well as a variety of scripts for common iterative schemes.

The AMPL user forum on Google groups is open to the public for


searching or posting.

Computers and Operating Systems Supported by AMPL

AMPL is available for many popular combinations of computer and


operating system, as shown in the table below. Both 32-bit and 64-bit
architectures are supported as appropriate. If a platform you want to use
is not listed, let us know; we may be able to build you a version.

Platforms listed in bold are also supported for all solvers available


directly from us. Information on supported platforms for other available
solvers is available from their listed developers or distributors.

There is a separate academic price list applicable to purchases by


degree-granting institutions for noncommercial teaching and research
activities.

Prices and configurations


AMPL prices are for the AMPL modeling language and system, including
the AMPL command-line and IDE development tools and the AMPL API
programming libraries. To make use of AMPL it is necessary to also
obtain at least one solver having an AMPL interface. Solvers may be
obtained from us or from another source.

As listed above, we offer many popular solvers for direct purchase; refer
to Solvers We Sell to learn more, including problem types supported and
methods used. Our prices for these solvers apply to the versions that
incorporate an AMPL interface; a previously or concurrently purchased
copy of the AMPL software is needed to use these versions.

Programming libraries and other forms of these solvers are not included.
AMPL may also be purchased by itself for connection to solvers sold by
other vendors and to noncommercial or experimental solvers. Contact us
or consult our Solvers overview page for pointers to detailed information
about all solver alternatives.

QuanDec turns any AMPL optimization model into a sophisticated


interactive decision-making tool. A QuanDec server license can be added
on to any server installation of AMPL and a solver.

License types
Each single-user license allows the product to be run in any number of
simultaneous processes, on one designated computer by one designated
user and userid. Sharing a userid to permit more than one user to access
a single-user license is expressly disallowed by the license agreement.
Each floating license allows one single-user license at a time (AMPL,
BARON, CONOPT, LGO, MINOS, SNOPT) or one process at a time
(CPLEX, Gurobi, Knitro, Xpress) to be activated on any computer where
the product is installed. One computer must be designated as the license
server; it may manage any number of floating licenses and may be
configured to restrict requests to a specified list of network (IP) address
ranges.

Maintenance

AMPL maintenance and support service includes access to AMPL and


solver software updates, regeneration of license files necessitated by
hardware changes, and technical assistance with installation and
execution.

Unless indicated otherwise, the quoted prices include one year of


maintenance and support.

Subsequent maintenance and support service is charged at an annual


rate equal to a percentage, currently 20%, of the license price in effect at
the time of renewal.

* Gurobi prices do not include first-year maintenance and support service.


The first year of Gurobi maintenance is billed at an additional 20% at the
time of purchase.

Beginning one year after purchase, maintenance and support will be


billed annually unless cancelled in writing by the customer prior to the
renewal date.
 
Volume discounts
Discounts may be available on purchases of multiple AMPL or solver
licenses.
Previous purchases can be counted toward volume discounts provided
their maintenance is current.

How to Sell
It’s free to list one item at a time for sale. Simply:

1. Click ‘Sell your XS’ from the Sell menu, or the ‘Click Here to Start
Selling’ button on the homepage.

2. Create a new account by filling in the form and agreeing the Terms and
Conditions.

3. On the ‘My Listings’ panel click the ‘New Listing’ button.

4. Add the details required to list your item.

5. Finally, click the ‘Put Live’ button to publicly list your item so buyers can
find it.

Designated as one of Georgia’s top providers of small business


assistance, the SBDC has 17 offices ranging from Rome to Valdosta to

The Small Business Development Center, a Public Service and Outreach


Extension of The University of Georgia, is funded in part by the U.S.
Small Business Administration (SBA).

The University of Georgia Small Business Development Center is


nationally accredited by the Association of SBDCs.

The concept for the SBDC program originated when Dr. Flewellen and
Reed Powell, dean of the School of Business at California State
Polytechnic University at Pomona were serving on the national advisory
council of the Small Business Administration (SBA).

The concept was simple: extend university-based knowledge to the small


business sector similar to the Agriculture Extension Service.

In 1976, the SBA allocated some of its own monies to fund eight pilot
programs, one being at The University of Georgia.

The success of these pilot programs paved the way for federal funding.
Senator Sam Nunn and others provided federal legislative support, and in
1980 President Jimmy Carter signed into law the Small Business
Development Center Act.

In Georgia, Representative Lauren (Bubba) McDonald championed the


SBDC concept.

A resolution was passed in January of 1977 by the Georgia General


Assembly that directed the Board of Regents to establish The University
of Georgia as the coordinating agency for the SBDC.

The resolution also permitted the state to fund the SBDC program.
