Question 2: Crisis Management

One student has her head down on the desk and other students are looking at her.

The given situation is an indirect distraction caused during a classroom session. The
student who is with her head down could be suffering from an ailment or could just be
pulling a number on the teacher as she may not be interested in the subject.

In a situation like this, the primary concern would be to attend to the student in
question, in person. A few minutes could be taken to approach the said student and ask what
the pertaining issue is. On such an enquiry if it becomes clear that the student needs medical
attention, it is advisable to immediately send them with an attendant to the school medic.
Thereafter, the attention and discipline of the class would be restored.

If the student does not require medical help and just needs to be allowed to take a
break, the student may be moved to a seat at the back of the class in order that she does not
draw the attention of the rest of the students. The class could be advised to “let the student
take some rest.” This could also be used as an apt situation to instil a sense of empathy in the
class.

One or more student/s is/are not participating or engaged in the lesson.

There could be many reasons for the given situation. The child could be having
difficulties adjusting to social settings and making conversations.

In a situation like this, my method of dealing with the crisis would be to help the
student get out of their social anxiety in a slow process. This entails having the students
working in pairs. Ideally, it would be advisable to pair the most outgoing student with the
said student in order to make them feel less pressured. This allows them to be more involved
in the activity.

Another solution is to have the students indulged in role-play, where each of them get
to play interesting characters with dialogues, making it easier to get them talking as they are
pretending to be someone else. This also acts an icebreaker for those kids who are leaning
towards introversion. Occasionally, if the rules permit it, the class setting could be shifted to a
more open place like a park or play-ground, in order to make the student more comfortable if
they are having trouble in closed rooms.

To get the students to participate more enthusiastically it is also required that the
lecture is not too boring or one sided. Therefore, an array of classroom games that includes
every student is always helpful in getting the students involved.
One student is causing disruption (acting out)

This situation is unavoidable in any classroom and yet not without solution. If the
entire class of students are acting out, then the reason for it lies in the teacher and their
methods used. In such a scenario, the teacher needs to change up the style of teaching and
include some interactive games and activities to get the attention of the students.

On the contrary, if it is one child who is acting up and disrupting the ongoing class,
the teacher needs to sternly advice the particular student to abide by the set classroom rules
and regulations. It is important to set up the classroom culture by making it clear to your
students that you will not compromise on discipline in your classroom. Setting ground rules
before your class helps in maintaining class decorum.

In handling students or children, rewards are more successful at correcting a child’s

behaviour as opposed to punishments. Therefore, show the students that good behaviour will
be rewarded. This will motivate the students act accordingly.

Grouping the students into batches of five or six will also encourage students to
behave well in order that their group does not fall short on points. This also helps the
individuals to behave appropriately by following the herd mentality as opposed to their
misbehaviour as individuals.
