CCOM Activity

- Communication models are systematic representations of the communication process that help explain how communication works. They simplify complex communication into basic components and symbols to form general perspectives. - The transaction model differs from other models in that it suggests participants are simultaneously senders and receivers, rather than alternating roles like in the interaction model. - Principles of effective oral and written communication share similarities in their purpose to provide tips for effective output, but differ in their application - oral principles apply to verbal communication while written principles apply to written works. - Ethics, purpose, organization, clarity and consideration of audience are important principles for both effective oral and written communication.

Exercise I. Answer the following questions comprehensively.

1. What are communication models? Why do you think they are introduced?
- Communication models are systematic representations of the process which helps in understanding
how communication works can be done. Models show the process metaphorically and in symbols.
They form general perspectives on communication by breaking communication from complex to
simple and keeps the components in order. Communication models can sometimes encourage
traditional thinking and stereotyping but can also omit some major aspects of human communication.

2. How does one model differ from the others?

- The roles of sender and receiver in the transaction model of communication differ significantly from
the other models. Unlike the interaction model, which suggests that participants alternate positions as
sender and receiver, the transaction model suggests that we are simultaneously senders and
receivers.

3. If you were to choose a conceptual model for communication, what would you prefer
and why? How can you be guided by any of these models when you communicate?
-I would choose this conceptual model because you can get feedback even during mass
communication and it promotes new communication channels. Guidance of the choice of any of these
conceptional models of communication is made by selecting the most appropriate and best suited
model for the type and mode of communication being made”.

4. How do the principles of effective communication differ from those of effective written
communication? Do they have similarities at all?
-Both principles have similarities; the purpose of both principles is to give tips and tricks in order to
have/give an effective output. However, they differ in terms to where these principles are applicable.
Principles of Effective Oral Communication is only applicable to any communication done verbally. On
the other hand, Principles of Effective Written Communication is applicable to any communication
done through writing.

5. How can you observe ethics in communication?

-Being ethical means acting under the principles of morality or acting in good moral standards. ... It is
important to communicate ethically today because most people are losing sight of what is right and
what hurts other people. Other than that there is also the thing of giving respect and being a
respectable human being.

6. Why is it important to have a code of conduct or a code of ethics?

-A code of ethics or code of conduct is a written collection of the rules, principles, values, and
employee expectations, behavior, and relationships that an organization considers significant and
believes are fundamental to their successful operation. It provides a framework and a standard for
ethical decision making within the organization. So that a person has a guide in doing what is right or
wrong. He/she is aware of what rules he/she is obliged to follow.
Exercise II. EFFECTIVE ORAL COMMUNICATION
View on You Tube the speech of President Rodrigo Duterte at Philippine China Trade and Investment
Forum Beijing, China on October 20, 2016.
Do you think the five principles of effective communication were followed? Which ones were not? Why or
why not?
What advice would you give to make the speaker more effective? Write your reaction to it.

President Duterte’s speech during the Philippine China and Investment Forum
Beijing, China on October 20, 2016 he really followed the five principles because first and foremost,
the first step is to be clear with his purpose or objective of the communication and President
Duterte’s speech tend to persuade, to inform, or to entertain. Duterte persuaded the audience by
giving examples like how Americans differ from Filipinos in terms of attitude and through his
experience the last time he travelled in US and how Chinese and American’s differ when it comes in
trades and businesses. Secondly, Duterte informed his audiences about his "separation" from the
United States and sought to strengthen ties with China. Lastly, Duterte entertain China by comparing
them to America on its power of industrialization that they were not right for this title it’s the China
who deserve it.

His speech has a complete thought and concise. Even on short duration he managed to speak all of his
concerns regarding the Americans and his friendship with China. He was specific towards the attitudes
of Americans as he shared his experiences and during the run of Americans in his country. Duterte’s
way of communicating was done naturally as his way of speaking effectively and confident enough
with his words.

Though Duterte is already an effective speaker my advice to make him more effective is he needs to
adjust himself in using Filipino Language if he was on an International speech. Thus, it became a
barrier towards his audience in understanding what he was saying. With his attitude in speaking, he
must establish an effective value system because at his speech he’s a bit hard toward Americans and it
should be ethically done not with the use of offensive and bad words.
Exercise III. EFFECTIVE WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

Read the translated English version in 2015 President Noynoy Aquino's speech on the Mamasapano
incident below then write your reaction to it. Do you think the speech followed the principles of effective
written communication? Why or why not? What advice can you suggest? Write your answer on a short
bond paper.

President Noynoy Aquino's speech on the Mamasapano incident was written and presented to inform
the nation and international watchers on the information the board of inquiry had at the time. The
speech kicks off with a considerate tone, explaining to both locals and global watchers of the
situation, and introducing the stakeholders subtly and clearly. The speech unfolds systematically,
clearly revealing the characters involved in a way that even those without any prior knowledge can
comprehend. Also, it observes a sympathetic tone while discussing casualties and maintaining an
authoritative tone on matters concerning the offenders.

Purposive communication involves creating clear, coherent, and effective communication.

The president's speech contained clear points, communicated in a very effective manner.
The presentation of ideas is persuasively done, with the use of appropriate language and tone
throughout the speech. The speech displays an awareness of the audience, with clear explanations to
suit even those who have no prior knowledge of the incidents. The speech also depicts an awareness
of the social and psychological context of the situation. Carefully selected wording to explain the
sensitive information is a sign of consideration of the psychological background of the matter. The
speech observed purposive communication, and effective communication achieved despite containing
a substantial amount of information.

COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS:
1. What is communication mode?
-Communication modes include natural speech, facial expression and gesture.
Exceptional communication modes include the use of graphic symbols or synthetic speech.

2. What are the different types of communication mode and how do they differ from each
other?
There are three types of communication mode:
1)  Interpersonal Communication- is a type of  face to face communication process by which people
exchange ideas, information, and feelings by verbal or non-verbal way.
2) Interpretive Communication- is a type of communication process where raw information is
translated into everyday understandable language for people.
3) Presentational Communication- is a type of communication where an individual is presenting
their ideas, information, feeling etc. in a spoken or written manner.
The difference between the three is that Interpersonal communication is a two way communication
while presentational communication has only an individual speaking and other(s) listening and
Interpretive Communication is just translating raw information into a language which normal people
can understand.

3. What are the other forms or modes of communication that have not been discussed and
which have recently become part of virtual communication technology?
-Visual communication is the conveyance of ideas and information in forms that can be seen. Visual
communication in part or whole relies on eyesight. Visual communication is a broad spectrum that
includes signs, typography, drawing, graphic design, illustration, industrial design, advertising,
animation, color, and electronic resources.
Virtual communication technology refers to any technology people use to communicate with each
other when they can't be face to face. It favors the ability to see and hear one another in real time,
simulating the experience of a physical visit. Such technology has been around for quite a few years,
with the introduction of webcams in the 1990s. But what was once a poor-quality, non-secure,
burdensome social experiment has developed into a productive technology that benefits families,
friends and businesses alike.

4. Explain Diana Wheatley's quote and give one illustration:

"Meaning is made in conversation, Reality is created in communication,
And knowledge is generated through social interaction…
Language is the vehicle through which we create our understanding of the world."
-This means that during a conversation, a meaning arises. People are the one who gives definition on
a certain thing and it is built in the middle of conversation. One the other hand, reality exists during
communication. Through communication people are able to do things possible which make it exist in
reality. Somehow, knowledge is gained. Through social interaction we can grasp knowledge and also
impart knowledge to others. Just imagine. Our class are divided into two groups to debate about
“Which is much better for our country, is it federalism or democratic country?” More opinions will come
up using their ideas and the others will just listen to gather information.
5. With the advent of computer-mediated communication or CMC, how can you be more
responsible with what you post in your own account as a way of conveying messages to
the audience?
-Never say something that’s not true unless you can personally substantiate it.
-Do not be derogative of another just because you can.
-Do not say anything about another UNLESS you are prepared to say it face to face.
-At all times consider that anything said or done on the internet or for that matter any other system with
an electronic memory has the potential to be stored if not for ever at least for a long time and if any of
your statements can be misinterpreted or taken out of context and made to mean different sooner or
later they will by either personal enmity or someone against the concepts you are putting forward.

COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS:
The input above are the reports about the use of social media by Filipinos. Sharpen your
understanding of the reading text by answering the following questions:
1. How much time is spent on social media sites by Filipinos? Japanese? Brazilians?
Americans? Argentinians?
-The average time spent by Filipinos on using social media sites is 4 hours and 17 minutes a day. It is
the highest time spent by any nationality according to a study. Following the Filipinos are the
Brazilians and Argentinians who spend 3 hours and 43 minutes and 3 hours and 32 minutes,
respectively. Americans were enlisted on the bottom half with an average time spent of 2 hours and 6
minutes daily and the Japanese where the least active social media users with an average of only 40
minutes per day.
2. What conclusions can you draw from your answer in no. 1?
Americans were raised in Western principle that getting to know yourself more is better than engaging
into groups so socializing is clearly minimal for them. Filipinos are known to be communicative. The
long hours of social media use can be connected to this Filipino characteristic. We often took hours
talking to our friends and catching up with our family relatives. For the increasing number of Overseas
Filipino Workers (OFWs) finding jobs on other areas of the globe, the use of social media is
advantageous to keep their communication. Social media are also used to showcase talents
(calligraphies, portraits, poems, dance and song covers), express opinions, purchase and sell goods
which catches the interests of Filipinos and makes them use it longer than other nationalities.
However, being communicative has its negativity and sadly, we make use of our social media for
these matters. Gossips and rants, often leading to misunderstandings, are evident in our everyday
living and unfortunately, social media is becoming a home for these arguments. Bullying, another
serious controversy in our country, has also taken a new form through the aid of social media in the
Philippines. Whether we use social media for entertainment, for spreading information, for persuasion
or for presenting our hatred and anger towards other people, social media has been a new bubble
world for Filipinos because of its features.
3. How would you compare the Internet speed in the Philippines with that in Brazil?
Argentina? South Korea?
-South Korea owns the title of having the highest Internet speed with 26.3 megabits per second
(mbps). Brazil and Argentina, on the other hand, have an average fixed-line broadband speed of 5.5
mbps and 5 mbps, respectively. Philippines, despite having the longest time spent in social media, has
the lowest
Internet speed in the entire Asia-Pacific with only 4.2 mbps.
4. What conclusion can you draw from you r answer no. 3?
According to the report, there is a relationship between poor fixed broadband speed and time spent on
social media. Social media offers a lot of wonderful photos and videos in one’s news feed. Despite
having a data promo package, Internet speed is still slow that photos are taking few minutes to load
and videos are always buffing. This is actually adding time to the average time spent of a Filipino in
using his/her social media.
An internet modem can also accommodate approximately 2-3 devices only. If another mobile device
will be connected, the already slow internet speed will be even slower and lagging will usually
happen. A download can’t also be made while watching online videos—hindering Filipinos to utilize
their social media accounts well
5. The author claims to global Internet use is on the rise. What facts does the author
provide to support this claim?
According to the report, Internet users soared 10% or approximately an additional 354 million people
to the current huge number of people. Active social media users also rose for 21% or an additional 482
million. Global active netizens using mobile phones and other devices propagated 30%, or another
581 million people. The total internet penetration rate is hoisted at 50% or 3.77 billion users proving
that approximately half of the world’s population is into the online world.

ACTIVITY 1. COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS

1. How does each one of the items in the following contrasting pairs differ from one another?
a. high-context vs. low-context
High context refers to societies or groups where people have close connections over a long
period oftime. Many aspects of cultural behavior are not made explicit because most members know
what to do and what to think from years of interaction with each other. Low context refers to societies
where people tend to have many connections but of shorter duration or for some specific reason.
b. sequential vs. synchronic
Some cultures think of time sequentially - as a line with one event occurring after another while
the other cultures view time synchronically - as a constant flow or cycle to be lived in the moment, and
as something that cannot be controlled or commodified.
c. affective vs. neutral
People in neutral cultures do not show their feelings, but keep them carefully controlled. In
cultures with high affect, people show their feelings easily by laughing, smiling, scowling – and
sometimes even crying, shouting, or walking out of the room. However Emotional reactions were
found to be least acceptable in Japan, Indonesia, the U.K., Norway and the Netherlands - and most
accepted in Italy, France, the U.S. and Singapore. Reason and emotion are part of all human
communication but different cultures show them in different ways.
2. What does the author recommend that we do to be successful in cross-cultural
communication?
Understanding how to communicate effectively with individuals who speak another language,
or who rely on different means to reach a common goal. When it comes to communication, what's
proper and correct in one culture may be ineffective or even offensive in another. In reality, no culture
is right or wrong, better or worse—just different
ACTIVITY 2. TRUE OR FALSE?

Write T before each number if the statement is true and F if the statement is false.

T 1. Intercultural communication occurs when there is interaction and negotiation between or

among individuals from different cultural backgrounds.
F 2. Intercultural communication refers only to communication that happens between or among
individuals from different nations.
F 3. Communication that exists between or among individuals from different ethnic, religious, and
regional backgrounds and sexual orientations is not considered as intercultural.
T 4. The DMIS by Bennett and Bennett (2004) can be used to understand those who do not
recognize other cultures and cannot communicate interculturally.
T 5. The denial stage could be interpreted as distrust towards other cultures.
T 6. The acceptance stage refers to recognition of cultural differences.
T 7. In the adaptation stage, individuals begin to integrate with other cultures.
F 8. Cultural sensitivity matters in intercultural communication.
T 9. One character trait of a competent communicator is sensitivity to nonverbal cues in other
cultures.
T 10. A competent communicator is a person who is effective in intercultural communication.
