Non-routine problem solving is not of a commonplace or repetitious character. It is a

problem which requires analysis and insight into known principles of Mathematics. It involves
difficult problem solving. It requires some degree of creativity or originality. Non-routine problems
typically do not have an immediately apparent strategy. Oftentimes, these problems can be solved
in multiple ways and with a variety of strategies.

Example 1: Study the figure below, each cube represents 1 cubic unit. What is the volume?
(Notice that not all of the cubes are visible.)

You can answer the problem in many ways:

Strategy 1 - Making a table of layers and number of cubes in each layer

Determine the width and length of visible cubes in each layer to find the
dimensions to be multiplied.
Finally, add all the cube in each layer to find the volume
Layer Number of visible cubes
1 1x2=2
2 2x3=6
3 3 x 4 = 12
4 4 x 5 = 20
Total 40

Answer : the volume of the figure is 40 cubic units or 40 cu

Strategy 2 – Listing Method.

List down all the number of expose/visible cube that you can see in each layer
Add the visible cube with the previous/ subsequent layer
Add all the number of cubes in each layer to get the total number of cubes
Layer Number of Cubes
1 2 = 2
2 4+2 = 6
3 6+4+2 = 12
4 8+6+4+2 = 20
Total 40
Answer : The volume of the figure is 40 cubic units or 40 cu

Example 2 : How many small cubes of sides 3 cm can be filled inside

a rectangular box with an internal dimension of 1.8 dm long,
1.2 dm and 1 dm high?

Multiplying the length, width and height of the internal dimension of the rectangular
box divided by the volume of small cubes will lead to a wrong solution. The volume to be filled
inside the rectangular box is a solid figure in which its dimension does not exactly fill in the
box. There will be little space that cannot be filled up with small cubes.

Wrong solution: V = l x w x h
= 1.8 dm x 1.2 dm x 1 dm
= 2.16 dm3
Convert 2.16 dm3 to cm3 = 2 160 cm3 ÷ 27 = 80 small cubes

7
MATH 5 QUARTER 4 WEEK 4
So how to deal with that extra space in the rectangular box to determine the correct number
of small cubes to be filled inside it?

Right Solution : Divide each dimension of the rectangular box to the dimension of small
cubes. Round off to the nearest whole number. Then multiply the quotient
1.8 x 10 cm = 18 cm ÷ 3 cm = 6
1.2 x 10 cm = 12 cm ÷ 3 cm = 4
1 x 10 cm = 10 cm ÷ 3 cm = 3. 33 or 3 (round to the nearest whole number)
To find the total number of cubes, multiply 6 x 4 x 3 = 72
Answer : A rectangular box can contain 72 small cubes
