Example 1. A cubical plant box on the side of the road has an edge of
3.2 meters. What is the volume of the soil to fill the plant box?
How will you solve the problem?
STEPS
Understand:
1. Know what is asked in the problem. The volume of the box
Plan:
3. Determine the operation or formula to be Multiplication: V = e x e x e
used V = e3
Solve:
4. Show the solution using the formula V = e3 , substitute 3.2 m for e
V = e3
= 3.2 m x 3.2 m x 3.2 m
= 32.768 m3
Check and look back: By working backwards:
32.768÷ 3.2÷3.2 =3.2m CHECK
3
MATH 5 QUARTER 4 WEEK 4
5. State your answer. You need 32.768 m3 of soil to fill the plant box
Plan:
3. Determine the operation or formula to be Multiplication:
used
Solve:
4. Show the solution using the formula V = e3
64m3 = e3
(Think of a number that is the cube root of 64)
64 = e because: 4 x 4 x 4 = 64
4m=e
Plan:
3. Determine the operation or formula to Multiplication : V = l x w x h
use.
Solve :
4. Show the solution using the formula V=lxwxh,
substitute 12 for l, 8 for w, and 6 for h
V=lxwxh
= 12m x 8m x 6m
= 576 m3
Check and look back: By working backwards: V = l x w x h
576 ÷ 6 ÷ 8 = 12m CHECK
5. State your answer You need 576 m of water to fill the rectangular
3
water tank
4
MATH 5 QUARTER 4 WEEK 4
Example 4. A turtle aquarium 60 centimeters by
1
15 centimeters by 30 centimeters is full of water.
3
Find the volume of water needed to fill
the turtle aquarium completely.
Solve:
4. Show the solution To find the volume of the water needed,
multiply the volume of empty space in the tank
to the height of the aquarium. Since the
1
rectangular fish tank is full of water, the
3
2
volume of the empty space is 3. Therefore, the
2
height of the empty space = 3
x 30 cm
= 20 cm
V=lxwxh
= 60 cm x 15 cm x 20 cm
= 18 000 cm3
Check and look back By working backwards: V = l x w x h
18 000 ÷ 20 ÷ 15 = 60cm CHECK
5. State your answer You need 18 000 cm3 to fill the aquarium
completely
Plan:
3. Determine the operation or formula to be multiplication and division,
used V=lxwxh
Solve:
4. Show the solution Substitute 3 600 cm3 for V,
24 cm for l and 15 cm for w
V=lxwxh
3 600 cm3 = 24 cm x 15 cm x h
10 cm = h
Check and look back V=lxwxh
3,600 =? 24 cm x 15 cm x 10 cm
3,600=3,600 CHECK
5. State your answer A rectangular box is 10 cm tall
Plan:
3. Determine the operation or formula to to Multiplication and Division
used
Solve:
4. Show the solution Substitute 40 for l, 30 cm for w and 20 cm for
h
V=lxwxh
= 40 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm
= 24, 000 cm3
Convert 24, 000 cm3 to liters.
Since 1000 cm3
Is equal to 1 liter, divide 24,000 by 1000
24, 000 cm3 ÷ 1,000 cm3 = 24 L
Check and look back: By working backwards: V = l x w x h
24 000 ÷ 20 ÷ 30 = 40cm CHECK
5. State your answer 24 liters of water are needed to fill an aquarium
Understand:
1. Know what is asked in the problem Find the volume
Plan:
3. Determine the operation or formula to be Multiplication
used
Solve:
4. Show the solution So; if the area of the base and height are given,
the formula is V = Bh,
where B represents length x width or
the area of the base
Substitute 10 cm2 for B, and 3 cm for h
V = Bh
= 10 cm2 x 3 cm
= 30 cm3
Check and look back: By working backwards: V = B x h,
6
MATH 5 QUARTER 4 WEEK 4
30 cm3 ÷ 3 cm = 10 cm2 CHECK
5. State your answer The volume of rectangular prism is 30 cm3
Example 1: Study the figure below, each cube represents 1 cubic unit. What is the volume?
(Notice that not all of the cubes are visible.)
Multiplying the length, width and height of the internal dimension of the rectangular
box divided by the volume of small cubes will lead to a wrong solution. The volume to be filled
inside the rectangular box is a solid figure in which its dimension does not exactly fill in the
box. There will be little space that cannot be filled up with small cubes.
Wrong solution: V = l x w x h
= 1.8 dm x 1.2 dm x 1 dm
= 2.16 dm3
Convert 2.16 dm3 to cm3 = 2 160 cm3 ÷ 27 = 80 small cubes
7
MATH 5 QUARTER 4 WEEK 4
So how to deal with that extra space in the rectangular box to determine the correct number
of small cubes to be filled inside it?
Right Solution : Divide each dimension of the rectangular box to the dimension of small
cubes. Round off to the nearest whole number. Then multiply the quotient
1.8 x 10 cm = 18 cm ÷ 3 cm = 6
1.2 x 10 cm = 12 cm ÷ 3 cm = 4
1 x 10 cm = 10 cm ÷ 3 cm = 3. 33 or 3 (round to the nearest whole number)
To find the total number of cubes, multiply 6 x 4 x 3 = 72
Answer : A rectangular box can contain 72 small cubes
