Computer Peripherals
Computer peripherals refer to any external device that can be connected to
a computer which provide input and output information to the computer.

They are tools commonly used to extend the functionality of the computer and
are not necessary for the computer to run. Some peripherals are external devices
that allow you to input information.

For example, inputs maybe a mouse or trackpad to navigate the screen, a text-
type keyboard, or a microphone to record audio. While monitors, printers, and
speakers, etc. are output devices.

Categories of peripherals are listed below:

 Input Device - sends data or instructions to the user, such as a mouse,

keyboard (Braille keyboard), graphics tablet, image scanner, barcode
reader, game controller, light pen, light gun, microphone, video camera,
webcam, dance pad, and read-only memory;
 Output Device - provides output data, such as a monitor, projector,
printer, microphone, and speaker;
 Input/ Output Device - performs input and output functions, such as
touch screen tablet or mobile phone with stylus pen, router, modem,
fax, digital camera and fax machine.

There are interfaces for use as computer peripherals such as Internet-enabled

digital watches, keyboards, and tablet computers accessible by the Internet

Printer
An external hardware output device that collects and generates a hard copy of
electronic data stored on a computer or other device. For example, if you produced a
report on your computer, you would be able to print multiple copies at a staff meeting
as hand-outs. Printers are one of the most popular peripherals and are commonly
used for printing text and photos. The picture below is an example of an inkjet
computer printer, the Lexmark Z605.EPSON, CANNON printer.
Types of printers
Below is a list of various types of printers. Inkjet and laser printers are the
most common printers used today.

Printer interfaces
There are various ways a printer can connect to and
communicate with a computer (referred to as
interfaces). The most common types of connections
are either via USB cable (wired) or via Wi-Fi (wireless).
Uses of Printer
Each type of printer has different uses. The commonly used printer include

Storage devices

Storage device is a hardware used to transfer and save files or data using
computer software. It is use to save, retrieve, and extract data.
It can be used as an internal or external part of the computer. Storage devices
are usually called data storage or storage media, which is the most important parts
of the system unit. It comes in different functionalities, shapes, and sizes depending
on the needs.
Any information that can be stored either temporarily or permanently is
known as a storage device.

Types of Storage Devices

There are two different types of storage devices:
Primary Storage Device Secondary Storage Device
Size Smaller Larger
Data Temporary Permanent
Retention
Location Internal Internal / External
Examples RAM, Cache Memory Hard disk, Compact Disk
Drive, USB storage device
Examples of Storage Device:
 Magnetic Storage Device – one of the most popular storage devices used.

Today, magnetic storage is one of the most common types of storage

devices. This technology is mainly used on incredibly large HDDs or hybrid
hard drives.

o Floppy diskette – A normal 3 ½ inch disk can store 1.44 MB of data.

o Hard drive – The main storage device on the computer is the internal
hard drive. The external hard drive is also known as the removable hard
disc drive. It is used to storing portable data and backups.
o Magnetic strip – Film and audio magnetic tape drives are processed
using magnetic tapes, such as cassette and videotape recorders.
o Super disk – A disk drive that can hold 120 MB and 240 MB of data.
o Cassette tape – A magnetic storage device used to store and replay the
audio.
o Zip diskette – Similar to a floppy diskette but more advanced and
larger capacity.
 Optical Storage Device – uses lasers and lights as its data storage and
recovery mode.

Another common type of storage that uses lasers and lights as its
method of reading and writing tool is an optical storage device.
o Blu-ray disc – a hybrid optical storage system intended to replace the
DVD format.
o CD-ROM disc – A read-only optical storage unit that cannot be changed
or removed.
o CD-R and CD-RW disc – is a recordable cassette disk that can be
written once while CD-RW is a rewritable disk that can be written
multiple times.
o DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW disc – A digital video disc can
be recordable and rewritable. DVD-R and DVD+R are recordable discs
that can be written to once, while DVD-RW and DVD+RW are rewritable
discs that can be written to several times. Formatting and consistency
are the difference between the + and – signs.
Most magnetic and optical media have been replaced by flash
memory because it is cheaper as it is more powerful, handy, and efficient
to use.
 Flash Memory Device – replaces the magnetic storage device because it is
cost-effective, more efficient, and more reliable.

o Memory card – An electronic flash memory device that stores digital

information and is commonly used in electronic mobile devices.
o Memory stick – Also known as a disposable memory card.
o SSD – Solid State Drive – A flash memory device that uses integrated
circuit assemblies to store data on an ongoing basis. It has better
performance between storage devices and can save data as large as
HDD or hard disk drive. Although expensive yet durable, efficient,
faster to use, and can be used for both internal and external operations.
o USB flash drive, pen drive, jump drive, or thumb drive – A small,
portable storage device connected through the USB port.
 Online and cloud storage – is becoming increasingly widespread as people
access data from different devices. Early computers had no method of storing
information using any of the above technologies and had to rely on paper.
These forms of storage are rarely used or found today.
People need to back up data, the safest way, and the easiest way of
storing data is through online or cloud storage.
o Cloud storage – Data is remotely managed and made available over the
network. Basic features are free to use, but the upgraded version is
paid monthly for each consumption.
o Network media – Audio, Video, Images, or Text that are used on a
computer network. A community of people is creating and using
content shared over the internet.
 Paper Storage – a system used to store information by early computers.
Early computers had no method of storing information using any of the
technologies above and had to rely on paper. These forms of storage are rarely
used or found today.
o OMR – means Optical Mark Recognition – A method of collecting
identified human data from forms such as surveys and tests. It is used
to read questionnaires shaded with different options.
o Punch card – A piece of hard paper used to hold digital information
from the perforated holes. The data is defined by the presence or
absence of holes in a predetermined position.

Note: A hard copy could be considered a form of paper storage that is still widely used,
although without the help of optical character recognition or OCR it cannot be easily
used to re-enter data on a computer

Importance of storage devices

A computer would not be able to save or remember any settings or information
without a storage device and would be considered a useless terminal.
Through the advancement of technology, the systems used to store data has
higher storage space requirements. Because people need more space, they want it
faster, cheaper, and portable, as new technologies has emerged. Older devices
became obsolete because of invention of new designed technology, which was
upgraded to new devices.
What storage device has the largest capacity?
The largest storage device for most computers is the hard disk drive and Solid
State Drive (SSD). Another type of storage device that has a great capacity is Network
Attached Storage or NAS systems networked computer which has a large tape drives
and cloud storage access to greater storage.

Note: Storage devices are not input and output devices. Though these devices can send
and receive information, they are still not considered to be an input or output device.
Rather it is more appropriate to call as any device which can store and read information
as a storage unit, disk, drive, or media.
