Direction: Answer the following questions.
1. Consider the enterprise systems application areas listed in Figure 5.1. Which
application area developed first? Which one is most common today? What is a
“hot” application area today?
Enterprise system is defined as the large complex computing systems which
handle large volumes of data and enable organizations to integrate and coordinate their
business processes. Such systems normally are a single system central to
organizations and ensure that information can be shared across all functional levels and
management hierarchies. In my opinion, the application area first developed was the
enterprise resource planning system, the ERP tools share a similar method and data
model, covering a large and deep end-to-end operating process. The most common
application area used today is Office Automation, as this application allows the
organization to safely handle day-to-day operations. I assume that today's hot
application field is virtual reality and it could also be used in industry, for example, virtual
reality could be used in the training of staff for people employed in sectors such as real
estate or engineering.
2. Describe the fundamental differences between batch processing and online
processing. What is in-line processing?
A batch processing is usually used for huge volumes of data that have to be
handled regularly, such as paychecks or credit card transactions. The batch processing
system has several major characteristics: periodic collection, grouping, and processing
of transactions. Batch programs need little user interaction and need far less network
bandwidth than online applications. While the online system processes transactions as
they occur and delivers output directly to customers. Since online processing is
interactive, it prevents delays and makes a continuous interaction between the
customer and the device. The system handles transactions entirely as and when they
occur. Users are interacting directly with the information system. Users can access data
randomly. The information system must be available whenever necessary to support
business functions. In-line processing is the process of data in random order, not
subject to preliminary editing or sorting.
3. What is a vertically integrated information system? Give an example.
The Vertically Integrated Information System is an information system that
represents more than one vertical level in a company or industry, such as a system
intended to be used by the carmaker and similar independent dealers. For example,
Zara is a Spanish clothes and accessories company with over 1,000 stores worldwide.
Not only does it own its department outlets and distribution, but the vast majority of its
clothing is produced in-house. Zara is vertically integrated with the manufacturers and
designs of its products. Although most shops focus on local designers and
manufacturers, they are left at their mercy. Zara, on the other hand, can respond to
emerging technologies even faster than its rivals. It has also contributed to increased
productivity of stock management – something that is of vital importance in fashion
design.
4. Explain the concept of virtualization. Describe at least one type of virtualization
that is being used in IT shops today. Why is virtualization becoming important?
Virtualization is a technique for producing a software-based or virtual image of
something. One type of virtualization is Desktop virtualization, In this type of
virtualization, the operating interface that the user views and uses on a PC desktop is
separated from a physical desktop computer and accessible by a client/server
computing model. This virtualized desktop environment is stored on the server rather
than on the local storage of the desktop computer; when the user operates on his or her
desktop device, all programs, software, and files are stored on the server and all
programs and applications run on the server. The server does almost all the work, so a
thin client is a very appropriate desktop device, which saves the organization money.
Virtualization is becoming more important now because it can allow companies to
become profitable. It will improve the versatility, durability, and scalability of IT while
providing substantial cost savings.
