Performance Standard-Based Assessment Statistics and Probability 11.4.1

The Department of Health aims to provide measles vaccines to infants. A barangay health worker claimed that 60% of infants in Casili, Mandaue City received the measles vaccine. To verify this, a city health officer interviewed 120 mothers and found that 70 children received the vaccine. A hypothesis test was conducted with a null hypothesis of 60% vaccination rate and an alternative of not equal to 60%. The sample proportion was 58% which is less than the critical value, so the null hypothesis that 60% received the vaccine was accepted. The findings reported to the City Health Officer were that the 60% vaccination claim was proven to be true.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD-BASED ASSESSMENT

STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY 11.4.1

(Performance Task Sheet)

Name: ABRIA, SOPHIA VERA A. Section:11S3- NIGHTINGALE

Materials: calculator, performance task sheet

It is the aim of the Department of Health (DOH) to give measles vaccine to infants. When a
barangay health worker in Casili, Mandaue City was asked by the City Health Officer of Mandaue
City regarding the proportion of infants who received measles vaccine, the barangay health
working claimed that 60% of infants had completed measles vaccine. On the basis of this claim,
you as a City health personnel was tasked to verify this claim of the barangay health worker. You
were able to interview 120 mothers. Seventy of these mothers confirmed that their children
availed of the measles vaccine. You test the claim of the barangay health worker using 0.01 level
of significance.

1. What is the null hypothesis?

𝐻0 : 𝑝 = 60% - the proportion of infants who received measles vaccine is 60%
2. What is the alternative hypothesis?
𝐻𝑎 : 𝑝 ≠ 60% - the proportion of infants who received measles vaccine
is not 60%
3. What is the sample proportion? Show necessary solutions.
70
𝑝̂ = 120 = 0.58 𝑜𝑟 58%
4. Describe the direction of the alternative hypothesis.
It is two-sided or it must use two-tailed test in hypothesis testing. It is
because the alternative hypothesis is not equal. The direction does not
matter.
5. What are the critical values?
𝑧𝑎 = ±2.58 𝑜𝑟 ± 2.576
6. What is value of the test statistic? Show necessary solutions.
𝑝̂−𝑝
𝑧= 𝑝(1−𝑝)

𝑛
70 72

120 120
= 72 72
(1− )
√120 120
120
𝑧 = −0.37
7. Can you conclude that more than 60% of the infants had completed the polio vaccine in
barangay Casili? Why?
It is not stated in the situation above that it is claimed by the barangay health
workers so we can’t conclude anything about it. But I can conclude that 60% of infants
had completed the vaccine which is the null hypothesis. It is for a reason that the test-
statistic value of z= - 0.37 is lesser than critical values ±2.576, which tells that the
decision is to accept the null hypothesis, 𝐻0 : 𝑝 = 60%.
8. What findings will you report to the City Health Officer?
The barangay health workers of Casili, Mandaue City had claimed that 60% of infants
completed measles vaccine. Through hypothesis testing under the curve the claim has proven
true.
𝑝 = 𝑝0 𝑧 − 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 = ±0.37
