Practise Set- III

Power Electronics (ELE 602)

Department of Electrical Engineering
National Institute of Technology, Srinagar

Course Coordinator: Ms. Tabish Nazir Mir

The following questions are meant for practice purpose. No submission is expected.
1) A 1-φ half-wave converter fed from 230 V source is feeding an RLE load and has a freewheeling
diode. It is given that L is sufficiently large (CCM),E=100 V and R=0.01 Ω.
a) Draw source voltage, load current, load voltage and source current.
b) If the average value of load current is 100 A, find the value of α?

2) A semi-converter (asymmetrical configuration) fed from a 230 V source, feeds an RE load, with
R=10 Ω and E=100 V.
(a) Determine, the average value of load current if α = 60o .
(b) If a high inductance is connected in series with the load, find the new value of average load
current.

3) A semi-converter (symmetrical configuration) fed from a 230 V source, is feeding an RLE load
(DCM). The average load current is io = 1.8A, α = 110o and the current is observed to become zero
at 50o beyond the zero crossing.
a) Sketch the source voltage, load current and load voltage waveforms.
b) Determine the value of E. Assume R=6Ω

4) A single phase full converter (CCM) fed from a 230 V source is driving a separately excited DC
motor at α = 30o . The average armature current of the motor is 10 A. The armature is resistance is
1 Ω. If the motor constant is 162.97 rad−1 and the field circuit establishes a flux of 0.00293 Wb, find
the motor speed in rpm.

5)A single phase semiconverter is feeding a highly inductive load (RL) such that the load current is
almost a constant DC.

(a) Draw waveforms for source voltage, load current, load voltage and source current.
(b)Using fourier series analysis of the source current, find the expressions of fundamental fourier
coefficients ’a1 ’and ’b1 ’.
(c) Using ’a1 ’and ’b1 ’, find the expression for fundamental component of source current (is1 ). Find
the RMS value of this fundamental component (Is1 )
(d) Find the RMS value of source current (Is ). Find Distortion Factor, Displacement Factor, and
Input Power Factor.

6) A buck converter is fed from a 12 V DC source. The power electronics device that it uses
exhibits an ON-state voltage drop of 1V.
a) Find the duty ratio at which the buck converter should be operated if an output voltage of 5 V is
desired.
b) What will be the voltage rating of the switch used (Voltage rating= Maximum voltage blocked
by the switch)?

7)A boost converter is operated at D=0.1. The load resistance is 10 Ω and the load voltage is 100
V.
a) Find the DC source voltage.
b) Assume lossless boost converter, and find the average value of source current.

c) What is the power delivered by the source?

8)A single phase H-bridge Inverter fed from a 100 V source is feeding an RL load with the
frequency of output being 50 Hz. The load parameters are R= 5 Ω and L= 15 mH.
(a) What is the voltage rating of each switch?
(b)What is the time duration of conduction of diodes and IGBTs in each cycle?

Note: Whenever you’re asked to find voltage rating of a device, see the voltage that comes across it
when it does not conduct
