Tutorial 3 Open Channel Flow

This document provides 6 problems related to open channel flow calculations. Problem 1 asks to calculate the bed slope of a trapezoidal channel given the dimensions, water depth, and Manning's n. Problem 2 asks to calculate the volumetric flow rate of an open channel with a trapezoidal cross section. Problem 3 asks to calculate the depth of flow upstream of a hump in a rectangular channel. Problem 4 asks to calculate the normal depth of flow upstream and downstream of a change in bed slope for a trapezoidal channel. Problems 5 and 6 ask various calculations related to normal depth, critical depth, and hydraulic jumps for rectangular channels.

WATER ENGINEERING (WAE 310S) OPEN CHANNEL TUTORIAL

Issue Date: 28 /06/2021 Due Date: 02 /07/2021

1. A trapezoidal channel has a bed width of 3 m and side slopes of 2H: 3V. The water depth is
2.5m when the discharge is 10 m3/s. The finishing of the channels surface has a Manning’s n
of 0.03. Calculate the bed slope of the channel. [5]

2. An open channel has a trapezoidal cross section with a bottom width of 4m and side
11
slopes of 1 vertical to 2 horizontal. The Manning’s roughness coefficient is 0.025
1
and the bed slope is 1800 and the depth of the water is 1,2m. Calculate the
volumetric flow rate. [5]

3. A rectangular channel is 5m wide and 2 m deep and is laid at a slope of 1m/km with a
Manning’s 𝑛 = 0.02. At some distance downstream there is a hump of height 0.5m on the
streambed. Determine the depth of flow (y1) immediately upstream of the hump. (hint:
flow at the hump (y2) is critical flow ). [8]

4. A trapezoidal channel of bed width 5m and side alopes of 1V:2H has a flow off 15ms/s. AT a
certain point the channel bed slope changes from 10 m/km (upstream) to 50 m/km
(downstream). The Manning’s 𝑛 for the channel is 0.035, determine:
i) The normal depth of flow upstream and downstream. [8]

5. Water flows at a rate of 1.1 m3/s along a rectangular channel which is 1.5 m wide. The bed
slope of the channel is 1 in 100 and the Chezy C is 25 in SI units. Determine:
i) the normal depth. [3]
ii) critical depth. [2]
iii) A hydraulic jump occurs at a point where the depth is 225 mm, calculate the depth
on the downstream side of the jump. [4]
6. A rectangular open channel conveying water has a general slope of 1/100 followed by a
sudden change in longitudinal slope of 1/1000 for the remaining length of the channel as
shown in Figure Q4. If the discharge is 20 m3/s, the Chezy C for the channel is 58 and the
channel width is 10 m, determine:

y1
y3
y2

Slope = 1: 100

Slope = 1: 1000

Figure Q4

a) The normal flow depth (y1) on the 1/100 bedslope. [4]

b) The normal flow depth (y3) on the 1/1000 bedslope. [4]
c) Whether a hydraulic jump is likely to occur shortly after the change in channel bed slope to
1/1000. [3]
d) The flow depth (y2) directly upstream of the hydraulic jump on the 1/1000 bedslope. [4]
