Differential Equations (Mid-Semester Examination)

Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology Amethi

Time: 120 minutes
Date: 17-06-2021
Maximum Marks: 30

INSTRUCTIONS:
i. Please write your Name and Roll Number correctly on the answer booklet.
ii. This exam contains 3 problems. Attempt all problems and answer all parts of a problems at the
same place.
iii. Start all new problem from new page.
iv. Use of calculators or any other electronic gadgets are not allowed.

1. For each of the following statements, determine if it is always true. If so, answer TRUE and
explain why it is always true; otherwise answer FALSE and provide a counter example. Note
that no credit will be given to a correct guess without any explanation or followed
by an incorrect justification.
(a) For given continuous function p(x) and q(x), let y1 (x) and y2 (x) are the solution of differ-
ential equation
y 00 + p(x)y 0 + q(x)y = 0, x ∈ [0, π]
dy1 (x) dy2 (x)
such that y1 (0) = 1, = 1, y2 (0) = 0, and = 0.

Then Wronskian W (y1 , y2 ) at x = 4 is 4 . [2]
(b) For the differential equation

(x2 + x − 6)y 00 − xy 0 + 2y = 0,

the point x = −3 is regular singular point. [2]

(c) The initial value problem = 2021y 20/21 , y(0) = 0 has infinitely many solutions. [2]

(d) There exist continuous function p(x) and q(x) defined on [0, 1], such that the differential
equation
y 00 + p(x)y 0 + q(x)y = 0, x ∈ [0, 1],
have y1 = x and y2 = sin x as its solution. [2]
(e) Let y1 (x) and y2 (x) form a fundamental set of solutions of the differential equation

Then both y1 (x) and y2 (x) cannot have a repeated roots (roots of multiplicity two) at a
point x0 ∈ (0, π). [2]

2. (a) Find general solution of following differential equation [3]

2xydx + (y 2 − x2 )dy = 0.
(b) Find the general solution of the following IVP; [3]

x dx − 2y = x5 sin(2x) − x3 + 4x4 , y(π) = 2π .
x 1 ∞
(c) The function on the left side of e 2 (t− t ) = Jn (x)tn is called the generating function

of the Bessel’s function Jn (x). Using this relation, show that [4]

xJn (x) + xJn+2 (x) = 2(n + 1)Jn+1 (x)

3. (a) Let y(x) be the solution of the differential equation y 0 + y = |x|, x ∈ R. If y(2) = 2, then
what is value of y(−2) ? [5]
(b) Let y1 (x) and y2 (x) be two solution of the differential equation
