The document discusses the design of a pier cap as a corbel using the methodology from the book 'Concrete bridge practice'. It involves calculating shear, direct tension, flexural, primary tensile and horizontal/vertical stirrup reinforcement.

The design methodology used is as per chapter 23 of the book 'Concrete bridge practice' by V. K. Raina for the design of pier caps as corbels.

The main steps involved are: 1) Checking shear span ratio 2) Checking shear capacity 3) Calculating shear friction reinforcement 4) Calculating direct tension reinforcement 5) Calculating flexural reinforcement 6) Calculating primary tensile reinforcement 7) Calculating horizontal stirrups 8) Calculating vertical shear reinforcement.

DESIGN OF PIER CAP - AS CORBEL

This design has been done as per methodology suggested in 'Concrete bridge practice' by V. K. Raina chapter - 23

Depth at tip of corbel s = 0.15 m
Depth at root of corbel h = 0.3 m
Width of corbel b = 1.3 m
Corbel projection I = 0.5 m
28-day strength of conc. fc = 300 kg/cm2
Yield stress of steel fsy = 5000 kg/cm2
Coff.of friction m = 1.4 for conc.placed monolithic across interface
1.0 for conc.placed against hardened conc.but with roughened surface.
0.7 for conc.anchored to structural steel
0.6 for conc.placed against hardened conc.but without roughened surface.
Max loads on each bearings
1 Dead load of superstructure = 3.00 T
2 S.I.D.L. = 0.00 T
3 Live load with impact = 0.00 T
Clear cover to the reinforcement = 25 mm
Dia of bar = 16 mm

step 1

Shear span a = 0.25 = 0.9363 < 1 Hence ok

Effective depth d' 0.27

Ultimate factors for DL = 1.5

SDL = 2.00

strength of the concrete

Vu = 4.5 x 1000 = 1.621 < 36 kg/cm2

bd 130 x 21.4 Hence ok

step 3 Calculation of shear friction reinforcement :

Avf = Vu
0.85 x fsy x m

Avf = 4500.00 = 0.76 cm2/m

0.85 x 5000 x 1.4

step 4 Calculation of direct tension reinforcement :

At = Hu
0.85 x fsy

fsy = 5000 kg/cm2

Hu = 0.2 x 4.5 = 0.90 T/m

At = 900.00 = 0.21 cm2/m

0.85 x 5000

step 5 Calculation of Flexural Tensile reinforcement :

Af = Vu x a + Hu x h - d'
0.85 x fsy x d

0.85 x 5000 x 21

step 6 Calculation of Primary Tensile reinforcement :

As ( greater among these ) < Af + At = 1.48 cm2/m

As = 4.101 cm2/m

step 7 Calculation of horizontal stirrups:

Ah ( greater among these ) < 0.5 x Af = 0.64 cm2/m

Hence ok

step 8 Calculation of Vertical shear reinforcement :

Av = 0.5 x Vu - Vc p
fsy x d
Vu =Ultimate shear force capacity = 4.5 T/m
d = 0.8 x d' = 21.4 cm
Vc =shear force capacity of unreinforced concrete = 48 T

V = k1 x k2 x tco
c

k1 = 1.14 - 0.7 d > 0.5

D in m = 0.267
Hence k1 = 0.95 Therefore K1 = 0.95
k2 = 0.50 + 0.3 p > 1
Hence k2 = 1.00
tco = 50 T/m2 for M 40 Grade concrete.
