(iii) Before scanning your answer sheets, put your signature on each page of your answer sheet. Make
a single portable document format (PDF) file of that and name it as <Roll Number>_<First
Name>_<Last Name>. Try to make a good quality version of your answer sheets PDF.

(iv) Upload the response on Google classroom submission portal on or before 06:00 PM. Only in case
of difficulty in uploading the file in Google classroom, you can email the file to [email protected].
Subject line of your Email should be “EM-1 answer sheet of <Roll Number> <Name>”.

Questions
Q.1 Describe in detail the four phasor groups pertaining to 3-phase transformers. Draw the phasor
diagrams and connection schemes for each of these four groups.
Q.2 (a) A 440V, 4-pole, lap connected shunt motor has a no-load input current of 15A and a shunt field
current of 10 A. At full load it takes a current of 150A. If armature resistance= 0.1 Ω, flux per pole
on no-load = 0.05 weber, number of armature conductors = 750 and contact drop per brush = 1V,
calculate:
(i) No-load speed (ii) Full-load speed (iii) Speed regulation
Armature reaction weakens the field by 1.5% on full load.

(b) What is armature reaction? Describe the effects of armature reaction on the operation of D.C.
machines.

Q.3 The armature resistance, shunt field resistance and series field resistance of a DC compound
generator are 0.2 Ω, 40 Ω and 0.09 Ω respectively. The load connected across the generator draws
a current of 100A at 230 V. Calculate the generated e.m.f. when,
(i) It is long shunt connection.
(ii) It is short shunt connection.

1
(b) What is the necessity of a starter for a d.c. motor. Explain, with a neat sketch, the working of a
3-point d.c. shunt motor starter, bringing out the protective features incorporate in it.

Q.4 (a) Explain the different methods of electrical braking used for braking of D.C. shunt motor.
Compare their advantages and disadvantages.
(b) A DC shunt motor, when fed from a DC source of 300 V, draws a current of 95A and runs at
1200 r.p.m. Now, if suddenly the excitation is reduced to 60% of its previous values, calculate
the new speed of the motor. Assume that the torque remains the same and the resistance of the
armature is 0.5 Ω.

Q. 5 (a) Draw the block diagram representation of electrical drives. Explain essential parts
of electrical drives.
(b) What are the advantages of electrical drive for a given application?
