This document outlines a complex engineering problem involving the design, simulation, and hardware implementation of a 50W Boost converter with different output voltage levels. The tasks include: [1] mathematical modeling and calculations; [2] simulation in MATLAB or PSIM; [3] designing a PCB layout and implementing the hardware using a standalone PWM circuit. Students will implement one output voltage level for the hardware while analyzing all levels theoretically and in simulation. A final report is required containing the design process, simulation results for all levels, hardware results for one level, and reflections.

Course Title: EEE338 Power Electronics

Task: Complex Engineering Problem
Course Instructor: Mr. Muhammad Saqib Ali
Lab Instructor: Mubeen Sabir

Instructions:

• Please use this as cover page for your report.

• Individual Tasks: 1, 2 and 4; Teamwork Task: 3 (Maximum group members 03).
• Explore chapter 08 and 09 of the text book for the relevant literature. Book: Power
Electronics, Circuit and Devices, and Applications by Muhammad H. Rashid, 3rd
Edition.

Name: ………………………………………………………….

Registration Number: ………………………………………….

Design and implement a 50W Boost converter for three different voltage level to meet
the following system specifications.

• Input DC voltage = 12 V
• Output voltage 18V, 24V, 30V
• Switching frequency = 10kHz
• ΔVo = 5% of the output voltage
• Design with minimal complexity is preferred

Task 1 (One weeks) [15 Marks]:

Mathematical modeling
i. Drive the mathematical modelling/formulation for inductor (L), output
capacitor (C), converter gain M(D) and load current (Io). You can use
“Fundamentals of Power Electronics by ERICKSON” as reference.
ii. By using the mathematical equations (i), numerically calculate the values of
inductor (L), output capacitor (C), duty ratio (d) load resistance (RL) and output
current (Io) for all three cases of output voltage with above mentioned specification.

Task 2 (One weeks) [30 Marks]:

i. Simulate the proposed design using MATLAB or PSIM

ii. Verify the simulation results with numerical values (Task 1) for Vo, Io, d and
load power (Po) for all three cases of load voltage.
Task 3 (One weeks) [40 Marks]:

i. Design a PCB layout of the proposed design

ii. Hardware Implementation in the form of product
iii. For PWM signal generation, function generator is not allowed. Therefore, a
standalone circuit such as 555 timer etc can be used for PWM generation.

Note: student will implement anyone of the voltage level for hardware implementation
only. However, for theoretical and simulation analysis all three cases of voltage must be
analyzed.

Task 4 (One weeks) [15 Marks]:

• Project report
Project Report must contain the following:

1) Table of Contents
2) Acknowledgement
3) Abstract
4) Introduction
5) Block Diagram of the system (with explanation)
6) Designing of each block.
7) Simulation Results [Take pdf or JPG printouts of the Vo, Io, Po and d] for
all three cases of output voltage levels. Label all results properly.
8) Hardware Results (for anyone of the output voltage level)
It must include explanation along with the following
Picture of PCB
Picture of PCB with components
Picture of packaging
Final Results showing good match with the given specifications
9) Problems faced during project
10) References

Deliverables:
• Simulation results
• Hardware results (Assemble hardware in the form of product)
• Project report
