knowledge?
My computer is one of the tools that I use the most to acquire knowledge. The production
of knowledge on the internet on my computer is what enables my acquisition of knowledge. This
tool allows me to efficiently acquire knowledge thanks to the immense amount of information
produced & stored on the internet, which is entailed in the use of my computer.
My computer has an enormous importance in my daily life, it enables me to surf the net
in search of information that will be provided to me in milliseconds. It also serves as a tool to
store information and knowledge so I can get back to it anytime I want. Without this tool,
knowledge acquisition would be difficult because it facilitates research and encompasses
knowledge produced by several people. Previously, if I was asked to do research on a scientific
or literary subject, I used to search for available books, and it took a lot of time and a double
effort. However, with my computer, I can easily access the ebooks library and get hold of many
books and articles and thus, it is easier to find topics. This allows me to find various sources and
specific information. During my free time, I often research information about topics that
fascinate me, for example, maritime life. While doing so my computer will provide me with
different articles, and diverse discoveries but also videos, which makes the information that I
acquire more real and efficient.
Previously, its role in my life was limited to searching, but after the pandemic, it became
the most important mechanism to communicate with my teachers and classmates. After the
approach of “studying remotely”, my computer has become a meeting place to talk to my
classmates and teachers. In addition to that, it became a shortcut in understanding some lessons
that were initially difficult for me. Therefore, this material tool has helped me in many ways
especially in difficult times. It englobes different ways with which I can store and access
knowledge in a shorter and more efficient method.
Object #2: My Dictionary
The second object that I chose is my English dictionary. I have been using this dictionary
for almost two years since I used it when I switched from a French to an American system.
When I moved to the American school, I faced many challenges: the most prominent of which
was the language the subjects were taught in. The dictionary was a way to learn the appropriate
scientific words and used the right terms in English. I turned to the English dictionary and it
became a part of me, so I tried to pick up some words from it and put them into my dictionary on
a daily basis. In this case, this tool produces abundant knowledge that I need to acquire for my
own understanding & needs.
This dictionary aims to facilitate understanding between two languages: French and
English. It is part of the cumulative knowledge built by a comparative method of one language
that I know, and a language that I’m trying to acquire. From the beginning, my studies were in
French, and it is very natural for my culture and ideas to be in this language, which means that
when I want to analyze a scientific or literary subject, I intuitively analyze it in French. My
English improved and I began studying scientific subjects in this language smoothly and that was
thanks to the English dictionary. This dictionary facilitated the process of acquiring knowledge
during my classes because without it I wouldn’t understand the lesson well. It also helped me to
write my papers and essays in English because sometimes I knew how to write a sentence in
French but not in English so I often used this dictionary to be able to translate it in an efficient
way.
Object #3: The first reflecting telescope
Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newtonian_telescope
The third object that I chose is the first reflecting telescope. This telescope, also called
the mirror telescope, was presented by Isaac Newton to the Royal Society in 1669. It enabled
him to collect light that will reconstruct the image of a portion of the sky in their focal plane.
Hence, this tool was important for acquiring knowledge of the sky as well as being a role model
for future tools to produce knowledge.
This object allows us to discover the astrological world because, without this tool, the
exploration and the acquisition of knowledge regarding the universe would be difficult or even
impossible. The first telescope was one of the tools that allowed us to broaden our knowledge of
the universe and it allowed us to recognize characteristics of the universe and prove certain facts
that were unclear. For example, we were able to perceive the four Galilean moons of Jupiter and
the crescent phase of the planet Venus with his new small telescope. Isaac Barrow, Newton's
friend, showed the telescope to a small group of the Royal Society. Humans are curious to know
& discover the world around them and this telescope was one of the first objects which allowed
us to satisfy this curiosity which results in the common knowledge of the universe.
This telescope was made for Newton to satiate his curiosity about the universe because it
is something so large and so mysterious. Even the Royal Society kept the telescope because it
was the first-ever tool that would enable humans to discover more about the universe and to
advance our understanding of the planet earth. This telescope was a base for other astronomers to
build more advanced telescopes. This object is an example of how material tools can help
humans to appease their curiosity by assisting in a knowledge’s acquisition and is also proof that
material tools are useful in the production of knowledge.
