Art Appreciation: Creativity, Imagination, and Expression

 Art is a product of man’s creativity, imagination, and expression. However, not

everything is considered an art. Nature is not considered an art because nature was not
created by man. Nature can only be an inspiration for artists, but an artist invests his own
forms and patterns depending on what he perceives as beautiful.

Art Appreciation as a Way of Life

 Jean Paul Sartre, a twentieth French philosopher, defined art as a creative work that sees
the world in a very different way because of human freedom. A piece of an art has a very
unique beauty that the artist sees and wants the people to see the beauty the same way the
artist did.
 However, not everyone will appreciate the art of an artist. Because of this, many artists
are unnoticed and miss opportunities. Understanding art is important, this will allow us to
understand the purpose and recognize the beauty of an art possesses. Second, it will also
allow us to make fine choices for the luxuries we are acquiring. Third, art appreciation
will give us a rewarding experience. Appreciating it will lead us to a more meaningful
life. (Collins and Riley, 1931).

Role of Creativity in Art Making

 Creativity requires thinking outside of the box. Creativity is what makes an artwork
distinguishable. However, creativity should be carefully researched because you don’t
know if someone had the same idea as you in this world, and you just don’t know it.
 Art are used to solve problems, conflate function and style, and make life more
enjoyable.

Art as Expression

 Art is a form of expressing something we cannot literally understand- our emotions.

 Robin George Collingwood, an English philosopher who published “The Principles of
Art” said, “what an artist does to an emotion is not induce to it, but express it.”
Expression allows the artist to create something beautiful and make a reflection of their
inner selves.
 In this part, it was also stated that expression is different to description. Description is
explicit, and expression is implicit. Collingwood set an example like explicitly saying, “I
am angry” is not a form of expression, but just a description. The example destroyed the
idea of expression because it had already made the emotion predictable and ordinary. On
the other hand, expression allows us to individualize ourselves because we have the
freedom to express ourselves the way we want to.
