2. Test procedure
Step 1 Connect the test optical line according to the above diagram. Optical attenuator 1 can employ a
non-adjustable 10 dB fixed optical attenuator. Ensure the input power at IN end of SDH tester
within the permitted range.
Step 2 Adjust the adjustable optical attenuator 2 to ensure that there is no alarm found on the board.
Step 3 The sensitivity can be tested by the self-loop alarm of the board. Use the self-loop fiber to self
loop other channels, so as to prevent the board from generating alarms.
Step 4 Adjust the tunable attenuator to increase the attenuation value to the critical point of the board
alarm; disconnect the receiving end of OTU; measure the input optical signal power with the
optical power, which is right the receiver sensitivity of OTU.
Node No. Slot Board type Optical interface No. Test result (dBm) Conclusion
Note: Each PAT member must sign each test result on site
Remarks:
Step 2 Because there is no related test on the instruments, the sensitivity can be tested by the self-
loop alarm of the monitored board. Use the self-loop fiber to self loop other channels, so as to
prevent the board from generating alarms.
Step 3 Adjust the tunable attenuator to increase the attenuation value to the critical point of the board
alarm; disconnect the receiving end of OSC; measure the input optical signal power with the
optical power, which is right the receiver sensitivity of OSC.
Node No. Slot Board type Optical interface No. Test result (dBm) Conclusion
Note: Each PAT member must sign each test result on site
Remarks:
The frequency and wavelength of 40-channel (100 GHz interval) of C band is shown in the following table.
Step 1 Start the multi-wavelength meter and wait till preheating is over.
Step 3 Set the multi-wavelength meter in test mode, and press the AUTO key to start automatic test.
Step 4 Get the reading of the central wavelength value from the multi-wavelength meter.
4. Note
For the test on the central wavelength, a multi-wavelength meter is recommended. If the meter is
unavailable, the test can be fulfilled with the optical spectrum analyzer, but it should be calibrated before
the test.
Note: Each PAT member must sign each test result on site
Remarks
Step 1 Turn on the optical spectrum analyzer, and connect the test configuration according to the
above diagram.
Step 3 Press "AUTO" button of the optical spectrum analyzer to start the automatic test.
Step 4 Read the side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) directly from the optical spectrum analyzer.

Step 1 Select a proper spectrum analyzer and turn it on for preheating. Set up the optical path
according to the figure above.
Step 3 Press the AUTO button on the spectrum analyzer to start an automatic test.

2
Step 1 The input signal of the optical amplifying board comes from the multiplexer unit. Connect the test
configuration according to the above diagram.
Step 2 Adjust the tunable attenuator, to make the input power of the optical amplifying unit to be tested
within its permissible input range. Employ the optical power meter to measure the optical power at the
input end of the amplifier, and save the result.
Step 3 Employ the optical power meter again to measure the optical power at the output end of the amplifier.
And save the result.
M40
... ...
Step 4 Subtract the input optical power of the amplifier from the output optical power of the amplifier, the
result of subtracting is just the gain of each channel and the optical amplifier.
Note:
When the gains of the optical amplifier are measured, the optical spectrum analyzer should be applied.
The ASE noise will be significant after the amplification, when the input of amplifier is small signal. Thus,
the significant ASE noise will induce relatively significant error when using the optical power meter to fulfill
the gain test.

Step 1 Connect the test meters according to the figure above. For the M40, if the M40 has an EXT
optical port, the EXT port can be used to be connected with the OUT port of the M08 to test the
specifications of the M08.
Step 2 Test the output optical power W1 of ASE broadband optical source with the optical power
meter, and save it in Channel A.
Step 3 Test the power Wi of the input port of No.i channel of the multiplexer with the optical power
meter, and save it in Channel B. Fulfill the coverage storage for Channel B.
Step 4 Calculate the difference between the input and output powers: W (dB) = W1 (dBm)-Wi (dBm),
which is just the insertion loss IL of No.i channel.

Step 1 Connect the test meters according to the figure above. For the D40, if the D40 has an EXT
optical port, the EXT port can be used to be connected with the IN port of the D08 to test the
specifications of the M08.
Step 2 ASE broadband optical source can be substituted by an optical amplifying board, that is, when
the optical amplifying board has no input, open the pump laser, and what will be outputted is
just ASE broadband optical source.
Step 3 Employ the optical power meter to test the output optical power W1 of ASE broadband optical
source, and save it in Channel A.
Step 4 Then employ the optical power meter to test the power Wi of the input port of NO.i channel of
the multiplexer once again, and save it in Channel B. Overlay storage is implemented in
Channel B.
Step 5 Calculate the difference W of the input and output powers: W (dB) = W1 (dBm) - Wi (dBm),
which is just the insertion loss IL of channel i.
Step 6 Repeat steps of (4) and (5) to test separately the insertion loss of each channel, and record the
result.

Loopback test
Note:
(1) The loopback (bidirectional) test is usually conducted, while the unidirectional test is also acceptable.
Step 2 According to the rate of interface and Table A-5 in the appendix, select proper PRBS for the
pattern generator to send test signals to the input port of the tested system.
Step 3 When the system works normally, perform the 24-hour BER test, set the printing time, start the
test and lock the instrument.
Step 4 After 24 hours, read (by printing) the test results from the test meter.
