THEME 1 HOMEWORK PROBLEMS

Question 1 – Internal forces revision

A plane frame is restrained at joints A and C, as shown in the figure. Members

AB and BC are pin connected at B. A triangularly distributed lateral load with a
peak intensity of 1300 N/m acts on AB. A concentrated moment is applied at joint
C.

(a) Find reactions at supports A and C.

(b) Find internal stress resultants N, V, and M at y = 1.0 m on column AB.

Question 2 – Normal stress and strain

A pickup truck tailgate supports a crate (WC = 900 N), as shown in the figure.
The tailgate weighs WT = 270 N and is supported by two cables (only one is
shown in the figure). Each cable has an effective cross-sectional area Ae =
11mm2.

(a) Find the tensile force T and normal stress  in each cable.
(b) If each cable elongates  = 0.42 mm due to the weight of both the crate and
the tailgate, what is the average strain in the cable?
Question 3 – Bond stress

The steel anchor bolt with a circular cross section support a steel cable with a
cable for of 17kN. The anchor bolt is fixed by means of grout (G) into the insitu
concrete (B). The allowable normal stress of the anchor bolt is 160MPa and the
allowable bond shear stress for the grout is 3MPa.

a) Calculate the required diameter (d) for the bolt to the nearest millimetre

b) Assume the diameter (d) is 16mm. What is the minimum length (l) that the
anchor bolt should be embedded into the grout.

c) What is the maximum load that can be applied to the bolt given that the
diameter of the bolt is 16mm and the embedded depth is 150mm
Question 4 – Bearing stress

A tie-down on the deck of a sailboat consists of a bent bar bolted at both ends,
as shown in the figure. The diameter dB of the bar is 6 mm, the diameter dW of
the washers is 22 mm, and the thickness t of the fiberglass deck is 10 mm.

If the allowable shear stress in the fiberglass is 2.1 MPa, and the allowable
bearing pressure between the washer and the fiberglass is 3.8 MPa, what is the
allowable load Pallow on the tie-down?
Question 5 – Shear stress

The lever is attached to the shaft A using a key that has a width d and length of
25mm. If the shaft is fixed and a vertical force of 200 N is applied perpendicular
to the handle, determine the dimension d if the allowable shear stress for the key
is allow = 35 MPa.
Question 6 – Stress on an inclided sections

Two boards are joined by gluing along a scarf joint, as shown in the figure. For
purposes of cutting and gluing, the angle a between the plane of the joint and
the faces of the boards must be between 10° and 40°. Under a tensile load P,
the normal stress in the boards is 4.9 MPa.

(a) What are the normal and shear stresses acting on the glued joint if  = 20°?

(b) If the allowable shear stress on the joint is 2.25 MPa, what is the largest
permissible value of the angle ?

(c) For what angle  will the shear stress on the glued joint be numerically equal
to twice the normal stress on the joint?
