Purposive Communication II

1. Civility and respectful disagreement are essential to productive political discussions. Personal attacks should be avoided, as they undermine meaningful debate. We should seek to understand differing perspectives with empathy and avoid becoming disagreeable when opinions diverge. 2. Civility stems from courtesy, politeness, and consideration of others. Modern society has lost these virtues to some degree. No matter one's accomplishments, lacking civility renders them hollow. We must cultivate respect for others in all situations to promote a civilized society.

Purposive Communication

1. "Living with policy differences is essential to politics, but policy differences need not involve
personal attacks that poison the process of government and punish participants. All of us should
banish hateful communications and practice civility for differences of opinion. We should love all
people, be good listeners, and show concern for their sincere beliefs. Though we may disagree, we
should not be disagreeable. Our stands and communications on controversial topics should not be
contentious. We should be wise in explaining our influence. When our positions do not prevail, we
should accept unfavourable results graciously and practice civility." [Dallin H. Oaks ]

Indeed, having different approaches and strategies are fundamental when talking about politics,
but it should not tolerate bullying, insults or any foul language that may inflict pain on others. If the
situation of disagreement arises, hateful rebuttals must be set aside. People should deliver with civility
to avoid starting heated arguments and be clear and wise in explaining their point of views as
disputations cues maledictions. And if the conversation came through with the opposing side having the
favorable ends, people should acknowledge ominous outcomes and learn to accept the result without
holding grudges. Above all, people should welcome anyone who wants to communicate with open arms
and dismiss oppression of any sort may it be on race, ethnicity, religious belief, and differences in sexual
orientation. Let their voice be heard and let the people around them share the worries of their
convictions.

2. "Civility is the root of the word civilization. It carries with it the essence of courtesy, politeness, and
consideration of others. How very much of it we have lost in our contemporary society! All of the
education and accomplishments in the world will not count for much unless they are accompanied by
marks of gentility, of respect for others." [ G.B. Hinckley ]

The transition of the world from the ancient to contemporary times happened right before our
eyes. This was not only accompanied by physical transformation because there have also been instances
when advancements changed people's manner and breeding. As the paradigm shifts through history, it
is said that the essence of graciousness, chivalry, and thought of others faded altogether. In the current
society, people would prioritize themselves and do things with their own selfish interests. They became
narrow-minded and go the extra mile to satiate their wants. People should know that regardless of the
degree of education, no matter how much accomplishments in science, business, and professions they
obtain, it is of no use if they lack what is generally valuable. They must be reminded that it will be for
nothing unless they are steered with gentility and refinement. Therefore, a foul behavior like hatred,
racism, and bigotry should be halted as it can lead to a cycle of what goes around comes back around.
Cultivating courtesy and kindness from all of life’s situations and circumstances, these are the true
essence of civility, a virtue to be admired, and a virtue to be acquired. After all, the word civilization
rooted from civility, they come hand in hand, and they should be brought along and passed down to the
next generations no matter what turnaround the world awaits.
