Oil and Filters, Mack Components

For more engine information, refer to the Service Information
in Function Group 2 and the appropriate vendor literature.

Engine oil not only lubricates the engine, it also seals, cools
and cleans the engine. Also, such things as filtering the in-
take air and using low sulfur fuel helps protect the engine
components. With better engine designs and improved en-
gine oils, the service intervals have steadily increased. The
service interval used depends on the engine manufacturer
specifications. Make sure that oils having the correct oil type
and the correct viscosity are used for the mileage interval
driven.

CAUTION
Please note that extending oil change intervals beyond
the ones given in this service bulletin may damage the en-
gine, and void your warranty, if still in effect.

Shorter oil change intervals are required if the vehicle oper-

ates in a dusty environment or if frequent starts and stops
are made.

Many aftermarket oil treatment additives claim to improve

engine oil performance when added to the engine oil. Do
NOT use such aftermarket oil treatment additives. Each oil
type recommended in this service bulletin already contains
additives that have been tested by engine and oil manufac-
turers. Adding aftermarket additives may put the engine at
risk of failure.

Always change the engine oil filters when changing the en-
gine oil. Previously, there were two types of oil filters used —
one type for normal change intervals and one type (long-life)
for extended change intervals. Now, only long-life oil filters
should be used with each engine oil change.

CAUTION
MACK-branded oil filters are designed to provide the
proper level of filtration and protection for MACK engines.
Filters that do not meet the same stringent requirements
may put the engine at risk of failure.

MACK Trucks cannot guarantee the performance of oil

filters not made or sold by MACK Trucks. The perform-
ance guarantee of any commercially-available oil filter is
the responsibility of the filter manufacturer.

Engine Oil Viscosity

Select an engine oil with the appropriate engine oil viscosity
based on the typical ambient air temperatures (AAT) in
which the vehicle will be operated. It is not enough to just se-
lect the right type of oil; the right oil viscosity is just as
important.

According to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE),

the correct viscosity is determined by the minimum AAT at
cold start and the maximum AAT during engine operation.
Use the adjacent temperature chart to select the best viscos-
ity. In general, use the highest viscosity oil available that still
meets the cold start-up temperature requirements.

Note: When using 10W/30, fuel consumption can be lower

than when using 15W/40.

W2068851

Temperatures refer to stable ambient air temperature

readings.

Note: Only VDS-4/EO-O Premium Plus approved oils (SAE

10W-30 and SAE 5W-30) can be used above +30°C (+86°
F). VDS-3, EO-N and EO-N PP approved oils can be used
up to +30°C (+86°F).

Engine Intake Air Cleaner

CAUTION
The condition of the engine intake air cleaner is monitored
by the air cleaner restriction gauge mounted on either the
air cleaner canister, the air cleaner outlet tube, or inside
the cab (dash mounted gauge). Continued operation with
the air cleaner gauge indicating a clogged air cleaner may
cause damage to the engine. Also, operating the engine
with a damaged air cleaner allows dust to pass directly in-
to the engine, causing damage. Promptly replace clogged
or damaged air cleaners.

The air cleaner gauge should be inspected regularly to moni-

tor the condition of the air cleaner. Replace the air cleaner
every 12 months or when either the restriction gauge red sig-
nal locks in full view, or the dash-mounted gauge (if
equipped) shows an air inlet restriction of 510 mm (20 in-

Engine Coolant

CAUTION
MACK Trucks recommends only using Bulldog VCS en-
gine coolant in the engine and radiator. Failure to follow
MACK Trucks cooling system care/maintenance recom-
mendations can render the warranty invalid.

DANGER
Antifreeze is hazardous to humans and animals if in-
gested. Always dispose of coolant according to Federal or
local regulations. Dispose of used coolant at a recycling
or waste collection center.

Note: Fully Formulated Coolant can only be topped off with

premixed 50/50 Fully Formulated Coolant when coolant lev-
el is low.

Note: Extended Life Coolant can only be topped off with pre-
mixed 50/50 Extended Life Coolant when coolant level is
low.

CAUTION
Do not top off with water. Topping off with water will dilute
the coolant additive package. Once diluted too far the ad-
ditive will no longer provide sufficient engine protection,
which can lead to serious engine damage.

The capacity of the engine coolant system can range from

approximately 39 liters (41 US qts.) to approximately 58 lit-
ers (61 US qts.), depending on the combination of chassis
model, transmission type, and engine size.

Change the standard coolant mixture every 500 000 km or

Rear Axle, Lubrication

Add rear axle oil or drain and refill while the axles are hot.
CAUTION DO NOT overfill.

Rear Axles With Front-Mounted Carriers

To drain and refill rear axles with front-mounted carriers, first
get the axles to operating temperature and park the vehicle
on a level surface. Then, remove the magnetic drain plug
and drain the oil from the housing. Clean and reinstall the
drain plug. Remove the filler plug and fill the housing with
recommended oil until it is level with the bottom of the filler
plug hole. Install the filler plug.

Rear Axles With Top-Mounted Carriers

To drain and refill rear axles with top-mounted carriers, first
get the axles to operating temperature and park the vehicle
on a level surface. Remove the magnetic drain plugs from
the interaxle power divider on the front carrier (if equipped),
the carrier bevel gear compartment(s) and the axle housing
(s) and allow the oil to drain. Clean and reinstall the drain
plugs. Remove the filler plug from the interaxle power divider
(if equipped) and add 1 pint (1.5 pints for CRD200 carriers)
of recommended oil. Install the filler plug. Next, remove the
filler plugs from the bevel gear compartment(s) and fill with
recommended oil until it is level with the bottom of the filler
plug hole. Install the filler plug(s). Then, remove the filler
plugs from the axle housing(s) and fill with recommended oil
until it is level with the bottom of the filler plug hole. Install
the filler plug(s). If the axle is equipped with an elbow fitting
in the axle housing fill plug hole, the easiest method for filling
the housing is by removing the breather fitting from the right-
hand side of the carrier and the fill plug from the elbow fitting.
Fill the housing through the breather hole until the oil begins
to run out the elbow fitting. Reinstall the breather fitting and
the fill plug in the elbow fitting.

Note: An oil trough with magnetic strips is attached to the in-

side of the bevel gear compartment cover. Clean this mag-
netic strip each time the rear axle oil is changed or when the
cover is removed.

Note: Clean the carrier housing breather(s) with a recom-

mended solvent and blow dry with compressed air each time
the rear axle oil is changed.

Typical Rear Axle Filler and Drain Plug Locations

Checking Rear Axle Oil Levels

To check the oil level in rear axles having top-mounted car-
riers, first get the axles to operating temperature and park
the vehicle on a level surface. Remove the fill/level plugs
from the axle housings and the bevel gear compartments.
The oil level is correct when oil runs out of the fill plug hole in
the axle housing and slightly below the fill plug hole in the
bevel gear compartment. On axle housings with the elbow
fitting in the axle housing fill hole, the oil level must be to the
top of the elbow fitting. If needed, add oil to the axle housing
and bevel gear compartment until the oil level reaches the
lower edge of the fill plug holes. Reinstall the fill plugs.

Note: It is not necessary to check the oil level in the interaxle

power divider. If the oil level is correct in the carrier, the level
in the interaxle power divider is sufficient.

For more information on the rear axle, refer to the Service

Power Steering, Lubrication

Power Steering Fluid

The power steering system fluid reservoir is filled with Auto-
matic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Dexron® III or better. The
reservoir contains 1.9 liters (4 US pints) for single gear and
3.8 liters (8 US pints) for dual gear power steering systems.
The fluid level in the reservoir with the dipstick.

Change the power steering fluid filter every 12 months, and

change the power steering fluid as necessary. When chang-
ing the fluid, refill the power steering system with the same
type of fluid originally used in the system. Refer to the label
on the side of the power steering reservoir for the correct
fluid.

If the power steering fluid has darkened, the power steering

system is running hotter than normal and the fluid is over-
heating. Troubleshoot the power steering system for possi-
ble overheating causes and change the fluid.

For more information on Steering, refer to the Service Infor-

mation in Function Group 6 and appropriate vendor
literature.
