First Grade Readiness Checklist

Reading
Recognize upper and lower case letters.
Know, identify, and increase sight word vocabulary, including words that do not
follow phonetic pronunciation (ex: their, you, have).
Know the alphabet and basic features of letters and words.
Memorize and correctly spell around 130-150 words.
Be able to sound out new words.
Be able to rhyming more words.
Tell the difference between facts and fiction.
Recall sequence of events in a story (first, second, third, ending, etc.).
Make predictions about a story based on the title and pictures.
Begin to understand simple punctuation marks (question mark, period, etc.).

Writing
Write upper and lower case letters.
Write their first and last name.
Be able to copy an unfamiliar word.
Recognize left-to-right progression, and top-to-bottom progression.
Create simple words and sentences.
Write in complete sentences.

Language and Listening


Express thoughts and feelings clearly.
Be able to ask relevant questions.
Repeat the major parts of a story such as characters, plot, events, and setting.
Participate in a group discussion.

Math
Know and write numbers 1-100.
Recognize that addition means putting two groups together and that
subtraction means taking away from one group. 
Add and subtract numbers 1 through 10.
Knows the value of a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter and can identify each
coin.
Recognize different patterns (and what object would come next in a
sequence).
Know the tools to measure time and temperature.
Understand comparative words: greater than, less than, heavier, lighter, etc.).

Science
Form conclusions based on comparisons, observations, and exploration (ex.
from scientific experiments).
Do easy, hands-on experiments.
Know their senses: hearing, sight, smell, touch, and taste.
Know the four seasons and their different climates.
Recognizes basic patterns in weather.
Know the difference between living and non-living things (a plant vs. a teddy
bear).
Recognize the life cycles of living things, such as a frog or butterfly.
Recognize how we impact the Earth in terms of recycling and pollution.

Social Studies
Know their birthday, address, and parents' names.
Know the days of the week and how to use a calendar.
Understand broad categories of time (past, present, and future).
Recognize American symbols (the flag, the eagle, the Statue of Liberty).
Recognize that maps, globes, and other models are used to identify and locate
places.
Understand what history is and know some stories, events, and people in history.
Know basic cultures and their traditions.
Know people and events honored in commemorative holidays.

Social Skills
Follow rules and routines.
Hold a pencil correctly.
Hold, carry, and use scissors correctly
Work and play in a group.
Share and communicate appropriately with other students.
Respect their peers.
Take turns talking and listening.
Raise their hand before being called on.
Seek help with assignments when needed.
Show an eagerness and willingness to learn.
Sit for a longer period of attention time than in kindergarten, at least 10-15 minutes at
one task.
Know how to properly dress themselves (jacket, shoes, and belt).
