CA1 Part 2 - Practical 1

This document provides instructions for a practical networking assignment involving configuration of switches and PCs in a small network. Students are asked to: 1. Configure the network topology in Packet Tracer with two switches and eight PCs. 2. Document the IPv4 addressing scheme and assign IP addresses to each device. 3. Configure security settings like passwords on the switches and IP addresses on devices. 4. Create a screencast demonstrating connectivity tests between devices using ping commands. 5. Submit a written lab report documenting the steps, with a discussion of MAC address usage. The submission must include the Packet Tracer file, screencast video narrated by the student, and written lab

Instructions
In this assessment, you will configure the devices in a small network. You must configure two switches and eight PCs
to support IPv4 connectivity. You will configure standard default settings including security on both switches. In
addition, you will test and document the network using common CLI commands.

When complete the following files will be uploaded to Moodle:

• Fully document all steps carried out in this assessment in a written report using the correct lab report format.
• Packet tracer file with working solution.
• Video of steps performed in connectivity test (Screencast-o-matic).

Note:

• When saving your Packet Tracer activity file, written lab report, and your screencast please make sure to
include your student ID number in the filename.

Important
Your submission must include all three files, submissions missing any components will be considered
incomplete and not graded.

Required Resources
This complete this assessment the following resources are required:

• Packet Tracer
o 2 Switches
o 8 PCs

Topology

Part 1: Create Topology

Total points: 5

Open a new blank Packet Tracer activity. Implement the topology shown above.

Part 2: Document the IPv4 Addressing Scheme

Total points: 15

Given an IP address and mask of 192.168.50.0/24, document the IP addressing scheme for this network using the
table provided.

Specification Student Input

Subnet mask (decimal)
Network address
First usable IP address
Last usable IP address
Broadcast Address

Document the IP address and subnet mask that is assigned to each device in the table below:

Device IP Address allocation IP address Subnet Mask

OfficeSw1 Interface VLAN 1 Second last usable address

PC0 First usable address
PC1 Second usable address
PC2 Third usable address
PC3 Fourth usable address
OfficeSW2 Interface VLAN 1 Last usable address
PC4 Fifth usable address
PC5 Sixth usable address
PC6 Seventh usable address
PC7 Eighth usable address

Part 3: Configure Device IPv4 and Security Settings

Total points: 30

Configure host computers.

For each computer in the topology configure the IP address that you have listed in the table above.

Configure Switches
Apply the configuration steps below to the OfficeSW1 and OfficeSW2 switches:

• Switch name OfficeSW1 / OfficeSW2

• Console access password conpass
• Telnet access password vtypass
• Encrypted privileged exec password enpass
• Encrypt all clear text passwords
• MOTD Banner “12345 – Authorised access only”

Replace 12345 with your student ID.

• Configure the Layer 3 IPv4 address on the switch management interface that you have chosen in your IP
addressing table.

Part 4: Screencast
Total points: 15

Verify network connectivity.

Important: Use Screencast-o-matic to record this part of the assignment. This will be a short video demonstrating the
connectivity tests performed. Save the video using the file name: 12345 - CA1-video (where 12345 is your student
ID). You must narrate your screencast, videos without audio will get a zero mark.

• Demonstrate using the show running-config command on each switch displaying the running configuration.
• Use the ping command to test connectivity between the devices listed below.
• Use the table below to document the results of the connectivity tests between each network device.
• If a connectivity test fails, where possible take corrective action and retest to confirm connectivity.

Part 5: Written Report and Discussion

Total points: 30

Document all steps taken in Parts 2 and 3.

For the discussion section of your written report, explain how the MAC address is used in communications between
two hosts on the same network.

For example, at a minimum you should include the following:

• Ethernet Frame
• Source / destination MAC address
• ARP table
• MAC address table
• How frames are processed by the switch

Part 6: Structure, Formatting and referencing

Total points: 5

You must include a minimum of 1 reference in the Harvard referencing format. A link to the Cisco Netacad materials
is acceptable.

Finish
Save your Packet Tracer file, Word document, and your screencast.

• Upload all three files to Moodle using the assignment link provided.
