1 SCOPE
This section covers PDVSA requirements for the design, specification, installation
and commissioning of process analyzers.
All guidelines of the introduction specification K–300 and packaged unit
specification K–335 shall also be explicitly followed.
3 DEFINITIONS
All definitions are listed in specification K–300. The following additional definitions
are listed to aid in the understanding of this specification:
Analyser House – a specific closed room or building containing one or more
analysers, which are or may be connected to a process installation together with
associated electrical equipment and auxiliary devices.
Note: Laboratories are not included.
Ventilation System – the complete HVAC installation required to produce
artificial ventilation.
Artificial Ventilation – a method of mechanical movement of air to reduce the
concentration of flammable gases or vapours in the analyser house. Such
ventilation may also be used to maintain the pressure inside the analyser house
above or below the external ambient pressure.
Forced Ventilation – artificial ventilation effected by blowing air into the analyser
house.
Induced Ventilation – artificial ventilation effected by the withdrawal of air from
the analyser house.
Ventilation Failure – a situation where the required air flow and, when applicable,
the required pressure, cannot be maintained.
Purging – the operation of passing a quantity of a protective gas through a closed
area and its associated ducts in order to reduce any concentration of flammable
gas or vapour, which may be present, to safe level.
Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) – is the concentration of flammable gas, vapour or
mist in air, below which an explosive gas atmosphere will be formed.
Upper Explosive Limit (UEL) – is the concentration of flammable gas, vapour or
mist in air above which an explosive gas atmosphere will be formed.

A Introduction
This section gives guidances for the construction and climatic conditioning of
analyzer houses. It also outlines the principles for their protection by artificial
ventilation against the hazards caused by internal release of flammable
substances, and if applicable, against the hazards presented by an external
explosive gas atmosphere.
It is intended for use in oil refineries, chemical plants, gas plants, in oil & gas
exploration and production.
Note: Certain guidelines are also included with regard to toxic gases (H ).
The PDVSA engineer or contractor if one is appointed shall determine by careful
scrutiny which of the requirement are more stringent, and which combination of
requirements will be acceptable as regards safety, economic and legal aspects.
Particular requirements are given for the construction and operation of artificial
ventilation systems for analyzer houses, for their associated equipment such as
air ducts and for the auxiliary devices necessary for providing and maintaning the
required conditions by ventilation, and over pressure above ambient.
This manual also describes the verification and testing necessary to prove that the
installation conforms to these requirements and gives recommendations for the
identification by ’nameplate’ of rooms and/or buildings and of services such as
vents and drains.
Dangers arising from the toxicity of gases and vapours which have to be handled,
shall be the subject of a special study on which basis, the appropiate measures
shall be decided and submitted to PDVSA for approval.
Notes: For the purpose of this publication, analyzer houses are assumed to have
forced ventilation systems, induced ventilation systems are not recommended.

Note: (1) This should result in the analyzer house being classified as
non–hazardous, under normal operating conditions.
(2) Analyzer houses shall be provided with fire protection facilities.
Note: The sample lines and the sample conditioning system will most likely
create a Division 2 area around the analyzer house.
Wherever the location, the air inlet (generally via a stack) for the ventilation
system and where applicable for the air conditioning system, shall be taken
from a non–hazardous area.
The selected location shall:
– Be as close as practicable to the sample points of the relevant analyzers,
in order to minimize sample transport time lag and cooling of the sample due
to low ambient temperatures
– Be free from spillage of water and process liquids

Note: The wall length per analyzer can typically be taken as 1000 mm on
average, but 2000 mm should be allowed for certain large instruments
such as PGC’s (Process Gas Chromatograph), viscometers and vapour
pressure analyzers.
Space shall be reserved for the installation of a sample conditioning system on the
outside walls of the analyzer house, in such a way that the analyzers and their
related sample conditioning system are situated back to back.
The length and height of this space shall be equal to that of the analyzer house
and the width shall be 2.0 metres minimum.
The sample conditioning space shall have a weather protection cover.
Note: Care shall be taken that the natural ventilation in the sample conditioning
area remains effective.
Sufficient space shall be provided inside the analyzer house for a sink, work bench
and auxiliary equipment such as control units and if required, recorders, signal
convertors, printers, computer terminals, etc.
Note: The junction boxes for signal cables shall be installed outside the analyser
house, against that part of the wall where sink and work bench, etc., will
be situated.

2) The type of protection for the lighting facilities shall be suitable for
Division 1 areas.
The use of prefabricated analyzer buildings, require PDVSA approval.
F.1 General
The analyzer house shall be ventilated with air to keep out flammable and toxic
gases, and any leakage of flammable gases and/or vapours that may occur inside
the house shall be diluted to a safe level.
The flow of air shall be sufficient to:
– Dilute escaping vapours, resulting from the rupture or failure of any sample
or service line, to less than 20% of the LEL around any potential means of
ignition
– Maintain the pressure inside the analyzer house at 0.25 mbar above that of
the outside atmosphere, to prevent entry of that atmosphere.
However, at least 12 volume changes per hour shall be provided to ensure
adequate mixing of the internal atmosphere, or at least 20 m3 of air per installed
analyzer per hour, whichever is the greater, to dilute any flammable gas or vapour
which may escape under normal operation to a non–hazardous level.
The required air flow rate shall be calculated for each analyzer house, based on
the above conditions and submitted to PDVSA for approval.

F.2.2 Ducting
Air shall enter and leave the analyzer house via ducting.
The ducting material shall be non–corrosive, e.g., hot–dipped galvanized steel.
The size of the ducting shall be such that air velocities inside will not create noise
levels which exceed OSHA and local limits.
Ducts shall not pass through Division 0 nor through Division 1 areas. Inlet ducts
shall be air–tight.
A filter shall be installed in the ducting such that it is easily accessible for cleaning
or replacement. The area of the filter shall be sized to require
cleaning/replacement not more than once a week under the maximum dust
conditions expected.
Ducting opening to atmosphere shall be protected from rain and particulate matter
and neither wind velocity or direction shall have any effect on the ventilation.
Nelson hoods and wire mesh screens shall be installed where necessary.

Notes: Typically, the maximum temperature inside the analyzer house shall be
35°C with a maximum humidity of 75%. This condition usually occurs in
non–tropical areas without HVAC.
Notes: 1) Electrical power cables and instrument signal cables shall enter and
leave the analyzer house via separate openings in the floor, at one of the
corners in the analyzer house.
2) Test equipment, electrical tools and electrical equipment without
adequate protection for a Division 1 area shall be connected to the
electricity supply via wall sockets only; the supply for which shall be
automatically isolated upon ventilation failure (I).

hazardous situations. The system shall, in the event of ventilation failure or loss
of overpressure inside the house, initiate the appropriate alarm and isolate the
electricity supply to wall sockets supplying equipment which is not adequately
protected for use in Division 1 areas.
Safeguarding components shall also have a type of protection suitable for use a
Division 1 gas hazardous area, with potential free contacts for initiating the alarm
and safeguarding system. The system shall be readily accessible for servicing.
Notes: The safeguarding system shall be designed such that power to all
non–isolated functions, e.g. via wall sockets, can be switched on only
after the ventilation system has been operating for at least 5 fresh air
