A Introduction
This section gives guidances for the construction and climatic conditioning of
analyzer houses. It also outlines the principles for their protection by artificial
ventilation against the hazards caused by internal release of flammable
substances, and if applicable, against the hazards presented by an external
explosive gas atmosphere.
It is intended for use in oil refineries, chemical plants, gas plants, in oil & gas
exploration and production.
Note: Certain guidelines are also included with regard to toxic gases (H ).
The PDVSA engineer or contractor if one is appointed shall determine by careful
scrutiny which of the requirement are more stringent, and which combination of
requirements will be acceptable as regards safety, economic and legal aspects.
Particular requirements are given for the construction and operation of artificial
ventilation systems for analyzer houses, for their associated equipment such as
air ducts and for the auxiliary devices necessary for providing and maintaning the
required conditions by ventilation, and over pressure above ambient.
This manual also describes the verification and testing necessary to prove that the
installation conforms to these requirements and gives recommendations for the
identification by ’nameplate’ of rooms and/or buildings and of services such as
vents and drains.
Dangers arising from the toxicity of gases and vapours which have to be handled,
shall be the subject of a special study on which basis, the appropiate measures
shall be decided and submitted to PDVSA for approval.
Notes: For the purpose of this publication, analyzer houses are assumed to have
forced ventilation systems, induced ventilation systems are not recommended.

B General safety considerations

The following measures are necessary to ensure safe conditions in the analyzer
house:
– The quantity of flammable materials retained in the analyzer house shall be
kept to a minimum.
– An efficient ventilation system shall be provided to continuously dilute any
internal releases of flammable gases or vapours, in order to reduce the
concentration at all times to below 20% of the lower explosion limit (LEL).
– Alternative precautions, which take ventilation failure into account.
– The provision of safe disposal arrangements for samples.
– Toxic / flammable gas sensors.

Note: (1) This should result in the analyzer house being classified as
non–hazardous, under normal operating conditions.
(2) Analyzer houses shall be provided with fire protection facilities.

C The location of an analyzer house

The analyzer house shall preferably be located in a non–hazardous area or where

this is not possible, at least in a Division 2 area.

Note: The sample lines and the sample conditioning system will most likely
create a Division 2 area around the analyzer house.
Wherever the location, the air inlet (generally via a stack) for the ventilation
system and where applicable for the air conditioning system, shall be taken
from a non–hazardous area.
The selected location shall:
– Be as close as practicable to the sample points of the relevant analyzers,
in order to minimize sample transport time lag and cooling of the sample due
to low ambient temperatures
– Be free from spillage of water and process liquids

Note: Locations under pipe bridges or other structures shall be avoided.

– Be free from shock and vibration from railroads, main traffic roads and from
vibrating process equipment such as reciprocating compressors
– Allow free evacuation in case of an emergency
– Allow free access for transport of (heavy) equipment, such as analyzers,
gas cylinders, tools and test equipment.

D The dimensions of an analyzer house

The dimensions of an analyzer house shall be as follows:
– The internal width shall be at least 3.50 metres to allow the installation of
analyzers against opposite walls.
– The internal height to ceiling shall be at least 3 metres.
– The length shall suit number of installed analyzers, and any other provision
mentioned hereafter.
The sizing of the analyzer house shall be based on the number and size of
analyzers to be installed, plus an allowance of 30% spare.

Note: The wall length per analyzer can typically be taken as 1000 mm on
average, but 2000 mm should be allowed for certain large instruments
such as PGC’s (Process Gas Chromatograph), viscometers and vapour
pressure analyzers.
Space shall be reserved for the installation of a sample conditioning system on the
outside walls of the analyzer house, in such a way that the analyzers and their
related sample conditioning system are situated back to back.
The length and height of this space shall be equal to that of the analyzer house
and the width shall be 2.0 metres minimum.
The sample conditioning space shall have a weather protection cover.

Note: Care shall be taken that the natural ventilation in the sample conditioning
area remains effective.
Sufficient space shall be provided inside the analyzer house for a sink, work bench
and auxiliary equipment such as control units and if required, recorders, signal
convertors, printers, computer terminals, etc.

Note: The junction boxes for signal cables shall be installed outside the analyser
house, against that part of the wall where sink and work bench, etc., will
be situated.

E construction of the building

E.1 Building Standards

The construction of analyzer houses shall be in accordance with the requirement
of:
PDVSA, VOL. No. 2 – CIVIL
Electric power and lighting, etc., shall comply with the requirements of PDVSA
N–201.

Notes: 1) The nominal light intensity shall be 400 LUX as a minimum.

2) The type of protection for the lighting facilities shall be suitable for
Division 1 areas.
The use of prefabricated analyzer buildings, require PDVSA approval.

E.2 Noise level inside analyzer houses

The noise level inside the analyzer house shall be in accordance with OSHA and
local requirements taking into account that personnel will be present for long
periods.

F The artificial ventilation system

F.1 General
The analyzer house shall be ventilated with air to keep out flammable and toxic
gases, and any leakage of flammable gases and/or vapours that may occur inside
the house shall be diluted to a safe level.
The flow of air shall be sufficient to:
– Dilute escaping vapours, resulting from the rupture or failure of any sample
or service line, to less than 20% of the LEL around any potential means of
ignition
– Maintain the pressure inside the analyzer house at 0.25 mbar above that of
the outside atmosphere, to prevent entry of that atmosphere.
However, at least 12 volume changes per hour shall be provided to ensure
adequate mixing of the internal atmosphere, or at least 20 m3 of air per installed
analyzer per hour, whichever is the greater, to dilute any flammable gas or vapour
which may escape under normal operation to a non–hazardous level.
The required air flow rate shall be calculated for each analyzer house, based on
the above conditions and submitted to PDVSA for approval.

mbar above the outside atmosphere, under normal ventilation flow conditions.
The area of exit ports to maintain the above overpressure for the given air flow
(F.1), shall be calculated and submitted to PDVSA for approval.
The inlet and exit port area shall be adjustable to enable the trimming of flow during
the commissioning stage.
Notes: 1) The required sum of the areas for the exit port can be found using the
following approximate formula:
Q
A +
C 0.V

Where Q = The quantity of air to provide the necessary volume changes in a

analyzer house of a certain size (m3/S)
A = The total ’leak area’ (m2)
C0 = a dischage coefficient which should be taken as 0.57 unless
otherwise specified
V = The air velocity which should be taken as 7 m/s maximum at the
dampers or grills to give an overpressure of 0.25 mbar.
2) The sizing shall taken into account the possibility of one outlet being
closed due to wind effects.
