COM 426 - Simulation and Modelling - Asignment CAT II

The document provides instructions for a group project on simulation and modeling for a class at Karatina University. Students are split into groups of 8 or less and assigned one of 11 areas of application to develop a conceptual model for using simulation software. The model must include at least 5 system components and 5 events. Each group must write a 7+ page paper describing the model's objectives, inputs, outputs, components, scope, level of detail, assumptions, and simplifications. All group members must participate in the project and its presentation.

CAT TWO FOR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

2ND SEMESTER 2020/2021

BIT 321: SIMULATION AND MODELING APRIL 30TH 2021

Instructions:

1. Work as a group of maximum 8 Students

2. Select one of the areas of application of Simulation and Modeling from the list
below that has not been taken by another group.

3. Develop a model and Simulate some aspects in this area using any
dedicated simulation software of your choice. The model must incorporate at
least five (5) system components and five (5) events.

4. Write a term paper of at least 7 typed pages, on the conceptual modelling of the
system. Your conceptual model should indicate the following components:

i) Objectives: the purpose of the model and modeling project, usually to set th
e basis for computer model.
ii) Inputs: those elements of the model that will be altered to effect an improve
ment in, or better understanding of, the real world;
otherwise known as the experimental factors.
iii) Outputs: report the results from simulation runs, also called the responses.
iv) Content: the components that are represented in the model and t
heir interconnections.
v) The scope of the model: the model boundary or the breadth of the real sys
tem that is to be included in the model.
vi) The level of detail: the detail to be included for each component in the m
odel’s scope.
vii) Assumptions: made either when there are uncertainties or beliefs about the
real world being modeled.
viii) Simplifications: incorporated in the model to enable more rapid m
odel development and use.
5. Every Member of the group must fully participate. Presentation will be done in
class in three weeks. All members will participate for assessment.

Areas of Applications of Simulation and Modeling include the following: -

1) Transportation applications:
Design and testing of alternative transportation policies, transportation networks-
roads, railways, airways etc. Evaluation of timetables, traffic planning.

2) Environment application:
Solid waste management, performance evaluation of environmental programs,
evaluation of pollution control systems.

3) Biological applications;
Such as population genetics and spread of epidemics.

4) Business process Re-engineering:

Integrating business process re-engineering with image –based work flow, using
process modeling and analysis tool.

5) Manufacturing: Design analysis and optimization of production system, materials

management, capacity planning, layout planning, and performance evaluation,
evaluation of process quality.

6) Business: Market analysis, prediction of consumer behavior, and optimization of

marketing strategy and logistics, and optimization of marketing strategy and
logistics, comparative evaluation of marketing campaigns.

7) Military: Testing of alternative combat strategies, air operations, sea operations,

simulated war exercises, practicing ordinance effectiveness, inventory
management.

8) Healthcare applications; such as planning of health services, expected patient

density, facilities requirement, hospital staffing, estimating the effectiveness of a
health care program.
9) Communication Applications: Such as network design and optimization
evaluating network

reliability, manpower planning, sizing of message buffers.

10) Computer Applications: Such as designing hardware configurations and

operating system protocols, sharing networking. Client/Server system
architecture.

11) Economic applications: such as portfolio management, forecasting impact of Govt.

Policies and international market fluctuations on the economy. Budgeting and
forecasting market fluctuations.
