Multipass Cabinet Version Laser Alignment: Tool List

This document provides guidelines for laser alignment of a LaserGas II MP Cabinet version laser gas monitor. It describes removing the sample gas cell and using an alignment laser or IR card to adjust the inlet and return mirrors within the alignment chamber to coarse and finely align the laser beam through the 38-pass gas cell and onto the detector. Proper personal protective equipment is recommended when working with gas cells.

Multipass Cabinet version laser alignment

This procedure is a guideline on how to align the laser on a LaserGas II MP, Cabinet version,
as shown below.

Figure 1 – MP Cabinet

Tool list:
- MultiPass alignment tool
- MultiPass alignment laser (alternatively IR card for visible lasers)
- Voltmeter
- Hex drivers (5 - 2.5 - 2 mm) w/rounded head
- Torx screwdrivers
- Disposable gloves recommended

NB! Do NOT touch any mirrors or optical surfaces, this will damage the
components and replacement will be needed!

Using an IR card for alignment:

The IR card can be used to see light that is normally not visible to the
naked eye.
The IR card can be used for wavelengths up to 1700nm but has the
highest visibility from 800nm to 1500nm.
To be able to use the IR card for alignment it is often necessary to
work in a dark room due to the low intensity of the laser light.

Using an alignment laser for alignment:

The alignment laser can be used in all cases and uses a laser that has a
visible laser beam.
To mount the alignment laser the instrument must be powered off and
the original laser module removed and replaced with the alignment
laser. Fasten the alignment laser with at least one screw to the chassis.

Alignment chamber:

Remove the top and side lid of the alignment chamber.

Adjusting the alignment mirrors:

The alignment chamber has two adjustable mirrors, the inlet mirror and the return mirror.
The laser beam goes from the laser module to the inlet mirror, through the sample gas cell,
back to the return mirror and finally to the detector.

Start by trying to locate the laser beam inside the alignment chamber.
If the returned beam hits the return mirror, adjust this until the beam hits the detector.
If possible avoid adjusting the inlet mirror as this is much more sensitive to the alignment.

If the returned beam cannot be found a complete realignment must be performed.

It is recommended to do the alignment with the monitor lying with the back down on a table
as in Figure 1.

Removing the sample gas cell:

This is easily done by loosening the four allen-screws that is mounted on the upper flange of
the cell.

Figure 2 – Cell, flange and screws

Once all four screws are loosened, hold the cell while removing the screws, and gently slide
the cell downwards. Do it slowly in a stable/controlled movement and make sure the mirrors
don’t get damaged when removing the cell. Put the cell aside.

NB! Make sure any toxic or harmful gases are removed from the sample gas cell
before disassembling it.

Place the alignment tool on the mounting rod as shown on the figure below.

Coarse alignment:

Figure 5 – Where the laser should hit the target

With the alignment tool in place use the IR card and adjust the “inlet mirror” in the mirror
house with an allen key until the laser hits the hole in the target as shown on the picture
below.
For a standard MultiPass monitor the laser beam passes the cell 38 times before it exits
through the gap on the upper mirror, making a total path length of 11.4 meters.

Fine alignment:

Remove the alignment tool.

If using an alignment laser the laser beam should now look like on figure 6. Please note that
the laser beam will not be visible through gold coated mirrors.

The laser beam should now return through the gap

on the upper mirror and into the mirror housing.
With the IR card and the allen key fine adjust the
“inlet mirror” until the laser beam hits the “return
mirror”, and finally adjust the “return mirror” until
the laser beam hits the detector.

If the alignment laser has been used:

- Remove the alignment laser
- Reinsert the original laser
- Power up the monitor

Figure 6 – Aligned laser beam

With a voltmeter connected to the LineUp Voltage connector inside the cabinet and fine adjust
the “outlet mirror” until the transmission is maximum (-3V = 100%)

When the alignment is finished remount the cell and lids. Pressurize the cell and make sure
there are no leakages. The cell mounted pressure probe can be used for this purpose.

NB! After reassembling the cell a leakage test should be perform with air, N2 or a not
harmful gas.
