CPP Assignment 3 and 4 Complex

Calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) is a widely used fertilizer that is hygroscopic and endothermic in water. It contains 8% calcium and 21-27% nitrogen. CAN is prepared through a reaction of nitric acid, calcium carbonate, and ammonium nitrate. To produce 1500 metric tons of 5Ca(NO3)2.NH4NO3.10H2O daily, the material balances required are: 1071428.571 moles of calcium nitrate, 1071428.571 moles of ammonium, and 2142857.143 moles of water. The byproducts (NH4)2CO3 and CO2 are also considered.

CHE:Chemical Process Principles

Assignment 3&4
Batch: FA20-CHE Section: A 2

Name: Hammad Khan

Roll No.: FA20-CHE-047

Due date: 24-06-2021

Introduction:

Calcium ammonium nitrate or CAN, also known as nitro-limestone or nitro chalk, is a widely used
inorganic fertilizer. Calcium ammonium nitrate is hygroscopic. Its dissolution in water is endothermic, leading to
its use in some instant cold pack.
Uses:
Most calcium ammonium nitrate is utilized as fertilizers. Fertilizer grade CAN contains generally 8% calcium
and 21-27% nitrogen. CAN is liked for use on corrosive soils as it ferments soil not exactly numerous normal nitrogen
fertilizers. It is likewise utilized instead of ammonium nitrate where ammonium nitrate is banned.
Calcium ammonium nitrate is utilized in some moment cold packs as an option in contrast to ammonium nitrate.
Calcium ammonium nitrate has seen use in ad libber explosives. The CAN isn't utilized straightforwardly, however is
rather first changed over to ammonium nitrate. CAN is also frequently used to make homemade explosives. The
potential of using elemental profiling and chemo metrics to match both pristine and reprocessed CAN fertilizers to
their factories for use in future forensic investigations was examined.

Composition Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (NH4NO3 +CaCO3):

1. Humidity (Maximum) =1.0%
2. Total percentage of Nitrogen (minimum)=25%
3. NH4+ =12.5%
4. NO3-=12.5%
5. Ca=8.1%

Method of preparation of calcium ammonium nitrate:-

1 A method to prepare fertilizer coated with calcium ammonium nitrate, which is characterized in that
it also comprises the following stages: the raw materials are 60 to 70 parts of nitric acid, 50 to 60 parts of
calcium carbonate, 3 to 8 parts of ammonium nitrate, silicon dioxide, sulfur and borax. The brown stone
here is the unit of mass. Method is to first mix nitric acid, calcium carbonate, and ammonium nitrate to form
calcium ammonium nitrate, then granulate with a sponge granulator, and then add silicon dioxide. The sulfur
obtained represents the finished product of ammonium calcium nitrate. 0.51.5 ~ 13% of the total amount of
calcium ammonium nitrate products, 0.10.5% of the total amount of calcium ammonium nitrate products,
borax spray paint, and finally cooling and packaging to complete the product in the granulation tray;
Calcium Ammonium Nitrate Particle Production Method Yes: Use dilute nitric acid; its concentration is
25% 30%; calcium carbonate is crushed into 10 meshes by a crusher after being crushed for use; prepared
Paris white is added to the reactor; 25% 30% of dilute nitric acid is mixed with neutralization; the
neutralization filter obtained; the clear liquid is pumped into the vaporizer; the transparent liquid evaporates
at 4043 ° Bé, the transparent liquid evaporates the liquid enters the tank and the ammonium nitrate solution
is added to obtain the ammonium calcium nitrate solution; then nitric acid. The ammonium and calcium
solution evaporates a second time; The vaporization temperature rises to 150-180 ℃, enters the sponge
granulator for granulation, and the granulated product enters the sieve again.

2 The method for preparing calcium ammonium nitrate coated fertilizer according to claim 1,
characterized in that the raw materials are 66 parts of nitric acid, 56 parts of calcium carbonate, 5 parts of
ammonium nitrate, silica, sulfur, borax, here shadow It is a unit of mass. Method consists of first mixing
nitric acid, calcium carbonate, and ammonium nitrate to form calcium ammonium nitrate; and granulate with
a sponge granulator; then add silicon dioxide, which represents 1.2% of the mass. total finished product of
calcium and ammonium nitrate, 0.3% of the total finished product of calcium and ammonium nitrate is
pulverized, and finally the finished product is cooled and packed into the granulation tray.

Material Balance of CAN:
One variety of Calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN)is produced by adding powdered limestone to ammonium
nitrate.

CaCO3 + 2NH4NO3 Ca(NO3)2 + (NH4)2CO3

But according to question, we need to produce 5Ca(NO3).NH4NO3.10H2O

This fully water soluble version is a mixture of calcium nitrate and ammonium nitrate, which crystallizes as
a hydrated double salt.

CaCO3 + 2NH4NO3 Ca(NO3)2 + (NH4)2CO3

(NH4)2CO3 NH3 +CO2 +H2O

5Ca (NO3)2 + 5NH4NO3+10H2O 5Ca(NO3)2NH4NO3.10H2O

Material Balancing:
Molar mass of 5Ca (NO3)2 NH4NO3 . 10H2O = 5×[40 + (14 + 48) × 2 + (14 × 2 + 4 + 48)] +
10 × 18

=1400gm

The daily target is 1500 metric ton = 1500×103kg

=1500×103×103gm
1500×103×103
So, number of moles of CAN = 1400

=1071428.571 mole

So, calcium nitrate required =1071428.571mole

So, calcium nitrate required =1071428.571mole

𝐴𝑚𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 = 1071428.571

From stoichiometry{ 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 = 1071428.571 × 2
= 2142857.143

Again Ca can be produced from CaCO and NHNO, but then we have to make use of by product.
