Researcher Henry Mintzberg has identified 10 managerial roles common to the work of all
managers, which he grouped into three major categories,- interpersonal roles, informational
roles and decisional roles.
Firstly, the interpersonal roles are primarily concerned with relationships with other people.
The three roles under interpersonal roles are figurehead, liaison and leader.
The role of I, the manager as a figurehead is to carry out ceremonial duties. I am the
top-level manager such as Managing director in the figurehead role. For example, when the
MCO came in effect, it is harder for the customers to come to store to buy groceries. For this,
I can plan to launch delivery service of my products bought by customers .I can assign
worker to be the delivery person. So the customer can call, the store order the groceries they
need ,which can be delivered to them later. This will attract customers and increase sales
and improve business.
Secondly , I can approve budget for the grocery store to buy new products and do
renovations to improve effectiveness and efficiency of the store. For example, I approve
budget on purchase of more masks and sanitizers as they are in demand in the pandemic
situation. As the products are in high demand, the sales will increase which will increase
profit for the store. Other than that, as figurehead I do plans such as to have festive season
sales such as on Hari Raya to increase sales on high demand products to attract customers.
This will encourage and motivate them and other workers to work hard. I will also
fulfill the safety needs which are the basic needs for safety and security. I would give
employee benefits such as medical benefits and bonuses to the workers on festive seasons
to increase their morality to work harder. Next, I will fulfill the belongingness needs in the
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory. For this, I also organize annual events to make them
mingle together so that the workers have good interpersonal relationships and friendships
with others, including friendly colleagues . This will make them feel belong to the workplace
and boost motivation to work harder.
Thirdly, role as a liaison officer. I conveys info to individuals outside unit or other
relevant parties outside organization. I would also act as channel of communication. For
example: I liaise with HR manager to check if employee needs are taken care of and if we
need to increase salary to cater current salary rate in the industry to make sure that
employee are given the fair amount of salary. Other than that, example , I also liaise and Co-
ordinate the Cross-Functional Teams such as the stock supervisor and to keep updates in
stock arrivals and stock decline to maintain correct amount of stock in store.
Next ,the category of role is Informational . I as manager obtain information and must
communicate information to people inside and outside the organization.
In this type of role ,I play my role as a spokesperson .For example, I lobby local
distributors for a new tender of products in my grocery. I choose the tender with the best
deal. Next, I also Communicate the KPI issues with higher managers. So, I will be a
spokesperson and discuss on the low KPI issue and on how to tackle the issue with my other
managers.
Secondly, I play my role as disseminator. I will forward information I got, seek and
received to other organization members. For example, I Inform the team about a problem
with KPI and assign roles to improve the KPI. For example, I will forward information I
received from the Health Ministry on guidelines to follow during covid-19 to the supervisor
such as following 1 m distance protocol, the maximum number of customers allowed to my
grocery store supervisor. So, he can supervise if the measures are taken correctly.
Thirdly, I play my role as monitor. I seek and receive information, scan periodicals and
reports, maintain personal contacts .For example, I evaluate the daily KPI dashboard, to
monitor worker performance . By doing this , I can monitor and have data about data of my
workers performance . So, if the performance of workers decline I can proceed to take steps
to revert back worker performance to optimum level .For example, I seek current information
about the covid-19 protocols from the respective authorities , to make sure that that my store
is following rules and laws at all times.
Next, the category of role is decisional. This roles require me as manager to plan strategy
and utilize resources.
In this category, I play role as a negotiator .For example , I negotiate with suppliers and
distributors on agreements regarding products that is bought . I negotiate to get the best
price but fair price so it’s a win-win situation between distributors and the store management.
Good negotiation will enhance good relationships between distributors and me as manager,
so O can have long term partnership with them .This will allow the store to run consistently
without any problems in terms of stock management and distributors. Next, I can also
negotiate with trade union on salary increment for the workers.
Next, the role is as disturbance handler. I take corrective action during disputes such as
labor union protest. For example, if the workers protest that they don’t have salary increment
in past 5 years , I will try to solve it in the best way. As this demotivates them, according the
Motivator-Hygiene Theory less pay or salary is one of the hygiene factors that dissatisfies
workers. This will decrease their motivation to do work efficiently which will affect the store’s
productivity. So, I will discuss with the Human Resources department and take action such
as giving fair increment in salary to fulfill their possible demands . By doing this, I can solve
the dispute between the worker and management .This , will allow to have a peaceful
environment in my grocery at all time. Other than that, I will take decision to lay off workers
or to decrease their salary during crisis such as pandemics of covid-19 to keep my grocery in
business and not bankrupt.
In conclusion, all managers perform managerial roles, with significant differences in the
types of roles they perform depending on level of management they are in. For example,
figurehead role is more towards the top-level
