SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION

Social networking addiction is a phrase sometimes used to refer to someone

spending too much time using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other forms of
social media, so much so that it interferes with other aspects of daily life.
A social networking addict could be considered someone with a compulsion to
use social media in excess. But its hard to tell when fondness for an activity
becomes a dependency and crosses the line into a damaging habit or
addiction. Does spending three hours a day on twitter reading random tweets
from strangers mean you are addicted to twitter? How about five hours? You
could agree you were just reading headline news or needed to stay current in
your field for work, right?
There is no official medical recognition of social networking addiction as a
disease or disorder. Still, the cluster of behaviours associated with heavy use of
social media has become the subject of much discussion and research.
This paper aims to study the social media usage pattern of a sample of
students from Alva’s college and gauge the pattern and relate the same as
symptoms of addiction.
One could agree that, at this point, social media platforms rule the world.
However, they have refused to take responsibility for that power or regulate
the fatal consequences of their product.
Maybe the time has come to regulate how the data is used before it causes
more irreplaceable harm to society.

SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION

The ease of internet access worldwide has made it one of the most
popular media of seeking information and communication. The
internet is now very vital in the modern world. The introduction of
social media in the last decade has largely attracted many people.
This has therefore shifted their focus from mainly using just
traditional media for social interaction. Also, the qualities of social
media make it a desirable escape for many of these people
increasing their dependency on it, thereby contributing to the
growth of the social media addiction phenomenon worldwide.
Social media are media for social interaction, using highly accessible
and scalable publishing techniques. Various social media sites include
Facebook, twitter, video sites like YouTube and blogs. Gaming is also
a part of social media because it is a virtual world where people from
around the globe connect through internet.
Social networking addiction is a phrase sometimes used to refer to
someone spending too much time using Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram and other forms of social media, so much so that it
interferes with other aspects of daily life. A social media addict can
be considered the one with an urge to use social media excessively.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:

 This paper aims to study the social media usage pattern of a
sample of students from Alva’s college and gauge the pattern
and relate the same as symptoms of addiction.
 To find out the social media platforms the students use,
 what they use social media for and
 to determine the extent or level to which the students of Alva’s
are addicted to social media and
 their impact on studies and day to day life.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY:

• This research sought to find out the level of addiction to social
media among students of Alva’s Degree College.
• It focused on 200 students drawn from various streams in the
current academic year.

METHODOLOGY:
• This paper used a qualitative approach which consisted of a
questionnaire distributed to a sample of Alva’s students
• For this study, the sample size was 200
• Simple random sampling method was used to select
participants in the survey.
• The data was collected through self-administered
questionnaires distributed to the respondents

FINDINGS:
• The findings show that the selected sample of people are all
social media users and the level of addiction of social media
differs from person to person.
• The study found that WhatsApp is the most subscribed to and
the most used social media site in Alva’s degree college.
• It was also found that the majority of these students use these
platforms mainly for entertainment.
• Findings also showed the existence of social media addiction
among students at different levels with majority of students
being in the moderate level.

THE FOLLOWING CHART REPRESENTS LEVEL OF ADDICTION EXISTENT

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY:
 The study was limited with the number of people sampled for
the study i.e. 200, which was an insignificant number
considering the population of alvas degree college being 3822
 Secondly, the method used was a limitation.
Survey was the only research technique that was used to
identify the existence of social media addiction among
students. It didn’t provide an in-depth analysis of the impact of
addiction on student’s academic performance and other
aspects of life. Future studies can focus on a group discussion
or interview in order to get effective conclusions
 Future studies should collect time series data for testing the
relationship between social media addiction and different life
dimensions and destructions.

CONCLUSION:
The study has shown that the students of Alvas degree college are
active users of social media. The research focused on students as this
is an important issue that concerns them and must therefore be
looked at. Like all other addictions, this addiction too negatively
affects various aspects of life. This could be a cause for concern and
attention must therefore be given to the phenomenon to prevent a
negative influence on student’s performance.

• Since internet shall become cheaper and accessible, internet

users will only increase in the future and addiction will rise.
Also, more networking websites like Facebook and Youtube will
develop in the future
• The truth is the problem lies not with the abuse of the medium,
but with the medium itself. Addiction was built into the social
medias design from the start.
• We should push the tech giants to change. And yet, for some of
us, that change will not come quickly enough. Deleting our
accounts -total abstinence- might feel like too great a leap. If
not to delete, then at least to detox.
