Research Title: The Implications of Modular Learning in Students’ Quality of Education

Chapter I

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

Education is the key to success. It is well established that the foundation for our future lies in the

accumulated learnings and experiences from our times acquiring knowledge in school. Education opens doors

to career opportunities; it flexes and strengthens our minds and introduces us to like-minded individuals (Van

De Walle, 2018).

Now that the COVID-19 Pandemic has introduced uncertainty to major aspects in our life, especially

our education which was usually obtained at schools, distance learning is a solution to contain the danger that

the pandemic pose. It serves a great purpose in keeping students, teachers and other school personnel by

reducing interactions to stop the spread of the virus.

Modular Learning is a form of Distance Learning that uses Self-Learning modules and is used in all

public schools in the Philippines. According to the Learner Enrollment and Survey Forms (LESF) gathered

nationwide, 8.8 million parents preferred the modular modality, that refers to both printed and digital or offline

learning materials.

While distance learning is a great way to disseminate knowledge and attain education where students

and educators are kept safe with the restrictions of physical contact, it is also known to impart disadvantages.

Most distance learning courses don’t facilitate oral communication unless the program is synchronous where

students are asked to participate by using some communication techniques. In addition to that, with distance

learning, interaction is limited, and hence the educators will not be able to interact with the students directly;

therefore, they can’t motivate the students as they do in the classroom (scholarship-positions.com, 2014).

It is also not denied that the Self-Learning modules that the Department of Education provides don’t

suffice the needs of the students to completely understand the topics. Researching from the internet is
presented useful to gather more information, but not all students have access to a stable internet connection to

be able to fully understand their lessons.

Aside from that, the number of activities that the modules provide can be a bit overwhelming for

students to complete. A student’s regular daily schedule runs until late in the afternoon, but this period often

stretches into the evening as they struggle to accomplish their homework. Some parents even resort to

answering modules themselves to help their children finish their schoolwork for the day. This can lead students

not to digest the materials they were given, and the possibility of their excitement in learning to be converted

into burnout (newsinfo.inquirer.net, 2020).

With all that, affecting the quality of education, that provides the foundation for equity in society, that

the students needed to get ahead in life can be a possibility and that will also affect what the future holds for

us and the incoming generations.

Having these observations, the researchers, through this study, want to create an awareness with the

hope of coming up with recommendations to improve the quality of education that plays a big role in creating

well-developed citizens that will be empowered to contribute to the maximum extent possible to the social

and economic development of their communities.

Statement of the Problem

This study deals with the implications of modular learning in student’s education. Moreover, this study

aims to generate and suggest ways for those involved with the enforcement of modular learning to avoid

obstructive negative effects and improve it.

Specifically, this research targets to answer the following research questions:

1. What are the main challenges of modular learning that students encountered?

2. How do students describe their experience with modular learning?

3. What are the possible ways to improve the modules provided to students?
Significance of the Study

This study targets to explore the implications of modular learning in students’ quality of education; thus, this

research is beneficial to the Department of Education (DepEd), the administration, teachers, parents, and

future researchers.

This research will help the Department of Education in addressing the need for improvement in

modular learning. By understanding the implications that modular learning constitutes, DepEd will be well-

equipped to re-evaluate the method.

This study will help the administration to gain insights into the students’ perspectives. This will lead

to guidance and support that will help students as they continue to adjust to the “new normal.”

This research study will help teachers in adjusting with the students through this situation. This will

impart ideas in making improvements to the students’ learning experience that will motivate and encourage

them.

This study will also help parents to understand the weight of modular learning to the students.

Furthermore, this study will shed light on the guidance that students needed from their parents in their

studies.

Finally, this study will help future researchers that is about to tackle the same problem. This will

provide contextualized knowledge and will answer questions that are on a personal level.

Scope and Delimitation

This research study aims to explore the implications of modular learning among students’ quality of

education. The participants of the study were students that use modular learning as a method of distance

learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The answers of the participants were interpreted and evaluated by the researchers. Moreover, the

responses were limited only to the necessary information about the said participants’ perceptions and

experiences.
This study did not employ any provided recommendations in improving or re-evaluating the said

method of distance learning. This is to provide a stepping-stone for future researchers that are interested in

the concept.

Definition of Terms

In giving direction to the course of the current undertaking, unfamiliar words or terms were

encountered. To understand the study, the researchers defined these terms conceptually and operationally,

which are as follows:

Education. According to Dewey (1978), it is a process of experience. Because life is growth, education

means helping inner growth without being restricted by age. The growth process is the process of adjusting to

each phase as well as adding in the development of one's skills. In this study, it pertains to the enlightening

experience that the students receive in school.

COVID-19. According to Cennimo (2021), it is defined as an illness caused by a novel coronavirus

now called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2; formerly called 2019-nCoV),

which was first identified amid an outbreak of respiratory illness cases in Wuhan City, Hubei Province,

China. In this study, it refers to the disease that is prevalent in the world that restricts physical contact.

Distance Learning. According to Papadopulou (2020), it is a form of education in which the main

elements include physical separation of teachers and students during instruction and the use of various

technologies to facilitate student-teacher and student-student communication. In this study, it pertains to

education that uses different kinds of methods that don’t require interaction between students and educators.
