This document summarizes an experiment on implementing Boolean functions using a breadboard and integrated circuits. The aims of the experiment are to understand Boolean functions, reading integrated circuit specifications, using a breadboard, and familiarizing with lab equipment. It introduces breadboards as useful prototyping tools for engineering students. Boolean functions simplify logic expressions. The experiment uses a 74LS00 integrated circuit containing four NAND gates to build circuits on the breadboard.

Noa Saula s11112442 Aim: The purpose of this experiment is to: Understand on how to implement Boolean functions Understand on how to read Integrated Circuit Specifications Learn how to use the breadboard Also to familiarize ourselves with laboratory equipment Introduction The breadboard is one of the most important tool for an engineering student. it is also known as a protoboard and is a type of solderless electronic circuit building. Solderless as in they do not require any type of soldering to make a circuit, this is ideal for engineering students. It consists of holes which are used by majority of the leads by electrical components this is done by inserting straight into the holes. The sections where the red line is the positive part and it runs vertical whereas the blue line indicates the negative and runs to ground and this also travels vertically. The holes are grouped into 5 and placed horizontally. Boolean functions are mainly used in the Boolean algebra which breakdowns the expression to a more simplified form. A simplified form means that there will be a reduced number of chips and gates. The Integrated Chip is also another important building block for students. It is an electrical component that consists of 4 gates of the same type. Each of the different are identified by a code, for example for this lab the chip that will be used is 74LS00. The 74LS tells us the technology and the last two digits represents the gate being used. Conclusion To conclude, we have learnt how to properly use the Breadboard and also to fundamentally know its inner workings and also fully incorporate any circuit diagrams onto the breadboard without any problems. The Chip was also another factor that was understood given time, the importance of it in the engineering and electrical manufacturing environment was fully learnt and some important details such as the fewer the chips the less heat is loss and the faster the system is run were discovered. Lastly is the Boolean functions, they play an important role in Boolean algebra in the form of simplifying the expression which in turn reduces the number of electrical components being used in any circuit or system and this is a advantageous to the manufacturing companys.
