We expect that before coming to class, you will be able to:
Define element, molecule, compound, atomic number, valence shell, valence electrons,
electronegativity, ion, cation, anion, solvent, solute, solution, hydrophilic, hydrophobic,
cohesion, adhesion, surface tension, specific heat, heat of vaporization, hydrogen ion,
hydroxide ion, pH, acid, base
List the six most abundant elements found in organisms along with their chemical
symbol and number of unpaired electrons in the valence shell
Describe the structure of an atom
• Explain the five big ideas of biology (FBIs) and relate them to what we have learned
• Explain the role of electrons in forming ionic, nonpolar covalent, polar covalent, and
hydrogen bonds, and distinguish between those bond types
• Explain how the ability of water to form hydrogen bonds gives it many of its life-
supporting properties with examples
• Examine how hydrogen and hydroxide ions relate to acids and bases and the pH scale
• Distinguish between organic and inorganic compounds
• Draw the structures and list the properties of the following functional groups: amino,
carboxyl, carbonyl, hydroxyl, phosphate, and sulfhydryl
• Define macromolecule, monomer, polymer, polymerization, condensation reaction,
dehydration reaction, hydrolysis
Study Tip
When learning lots of vocabulary, you can do a lot more than just memorize flash cards. After
you’ve learned each term, try pulling two at random and describing how they relate to each
other, or create a concept map using all the terms, or try to relate each term to an “After Class”
learning objective, or use each one in a sentence, or relate it an FBI.
