Activity No. 5 Drug Information Sources

Group 4 submitted their activity on drug information sources to Professor Jennybelle Bugayong. [1] They described the objectives of the activity as explaining different drug information sources, their usefulness, and limitations in terms of information retrieval. [2] The group analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of primary, secondary, and tertiary sources of drug information. [3] They provided examples of each type of source and concluded that medicine users report receiving drug information from many sources, though the most commonly used sources are not always the most reliable.

ACTIVITY NO. 5
DRUG INFORMATION SOURCES

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the activity, the students are able to:

❖ Describe the different drug information sources, their usefulness and
limitations in terms of information retrieval
❖ Provide valid examples of primary, secondary and tertiary sources

QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of primary, secondary and

tertiary sources of drug information?

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
1.PRIMARY • Most current evidence • May not lead one to
• Provide data on new best decision because of
drugs limited scope
• Can personally assess • Data can be poor or
validity of studies  controversial
• Every study has
limitations
• Too complex for
patients
2.SECOND  • Can construct  • Often require more
searches to find specific expertise to use than
information at high primary or tertiary
granularity  resources
• Retrieved references
must be filtered for
quality
• Must track down
resources before
looking for answers
• Too complex for
patients • generally
interpretations of a
study and may be a
misinterpretation of
important information.
Pharmacists should
obtain and evaluate the
original article because
abstracts may not
include enough
information to critically
evaluate the study.
3.TERTIARY  • Provide • Usually at least 2
comprehensive years out of date by
information publication
• Information reflects • High dependency on
views of multiple interpretation of
experts in field authors ,Pharmacists
• Fast, easy to use, and can address this by
may be good for consulting at least 2
patients tertiary resources

2. Cut/copy and paste (download) one (1) publication that represents each
drug information source.

WHO drug information provides an overview of

topics of current relevance relating to drug
development and regulation.
Latest lists of proposed and recommended
International Nonproprietary Names for
Pharmaceutical Substances (INN) are also
included

3. In modern day, technological advancement is getting broader-internet

sources are very useful. However, some best counterfeit sources look like the
real thing. How do you evaluate drug information sources from online
resources?
Have the opportunity to review the information and form their own
opinion of what the evidence supports. On the other hand, practitioners
must be proficient in interpreting and evaluating the strength of medical
literature. Additionally, decisions should not be based on a single piece of
evidence, but rather on a compilation of all available evidence.

Conclusion:
Medicine users reported receiving medicine information from many sources.
The most commonly used sources were perceived as the most reliable, but
their reliability did not seem to depend on age.
