Brief Introduction
In our society, we are all entitled to have different opinions, ideas, and sentiments toward a
particular situation or even in an argument. By doing so, we have to be mindful enough on how
to formulate our claims in every situation that we are having at hand. Take some time to read
and observe the sentences below.
What can you say about the sentences above? Basically, the given sentences follow
different forms of claim. Claim is a statement that shows the central idea of a particular topic. It
is where the writer or speaker wants to give, prove, and provide details based on his or her
observation, knowledge, and any existing evidence which can support his view in an argument.
There are three forms of claim, and they are the following:
1. Claim of Fact- is a statement that shows how things were in the past, how they are in
the present, or how they will be in the future (Ramones, 2018).
Example 1.1
President Rodrigo Duterte imposed community quarantine with strict protocols.
As you can see, it is true that President Duterte really imposed community quarantine in our
country. But the question is what makes a claim of fact argumentative? It is when the speaker is
claiming that his or her statement is a fact without a direct way of establishing the truth of the
claim. Another example:
Example 1.2
Having enough hours of sleep can help a student perform better at school.
Part of the characteristics of this type of claim is when the speaker is trying to establish a
theoretical perspective or even cause and effect relationship on his statement. So, in this
example, we can say that the speaker is trying to show a cause and effect relationship that he
or she is claiming to be a fact.
2. Claim of Value- this form of claim is subjective because it is based on the preference
and criteria that can evaluate whether something is good or bad and right or wrong.
Example:
The strict quarantine protocols are good enough to control the outbreak of COVID19 all
over the country.
3
In this example, the speaker is trying to convey that he is in favor of the existing protocols of
community quarantine. What makes a claim of value argumentative? It is when people are
having different points of view regarding the subject being discussed. For example, it can
possibly happen that not everyone in a circle of conversation has the same side or idea
regarding the protocols of community quarantine. Some may say that it is too harsh while others
may say it’s not. Hence, claim of value is most often linked to comparisons.
3. Claim of Policy- it is a statement which indicates that a specific action must be taken
based on the given policies.
Example:
People who violate quarantine protocols must be arrested fairly by the law enforcers.
In this example, it shows that there is a course of action which must be enacted upon
considering the existing policies. What makes a claim of policy argumentative? It is when there
is an instance that people are not completely aware about the specific course of action, yet they
must follow or do something about the said policies. Hence, this form of claim most often
contains modals such as should, must, and ought which show obligation, duty, and
responsibility in a course of action.

Remember
Before you proceed to the next part of this module, take a look at the following
considerations below when formulating claims.
As you engage with other people, it is very important that you express or formulate
your claim in appropriate way. First, you have to be knowledgeable enough about the
central topic being discussed. Second, make sure that you express your claims with
relatable basis that will support your views in an argument. Lastly, always listen or
read thoroughly the whole concept of the central argument in order to know how and
when you will formulate your own claims.
When formulating sentences stating claim of fact, you must be sure that your claim is
factual and argumentative. You have to make sure that the information is proven and
can support your views.
When formulating sentences stating claim of value, you must be subjective and able
to evaluate evidences and assumptions that support such claims.
When formulating sentences stating claim of policy, you must be well informed of the
existing policies that can support and strengthen your claims.
