The document is an exam for a course in machine design. It contains 6 questions related to designing machine elements and components. Question 1 asks students to design a syrup mixer using the design process and consider at least two options. Question 2 involves designing solid and hollow shafts to withstand bending and torque loads, and calculating material savings. Question 3 covers couplings, flexible couplings, and designing a muff coupling. Question 4 addresses keys and designing a square key. Question 5 compares screw types and designs a power screw. Question 6 involves designing a leaf spring for a tractor axle. The document provides relevant formulas for the design problems.

Question 1
Use the Design Process concept to design a syrup mixer. At least two options should be
considered and the sketched diagrams should be up to accepted engineering standards. You
should end your design just before prototyping. [25]

Question 2

In an axial flow rotary compressor the shaft is subjected to a maximum torque of 1500 Nm
and bending moment of 3000 Nm.
a) Neglecting axial load on the compressor shaft
i) determine the diameter of the solid shaft. Assume that the load is applied
gradually and the shear force is limited to 80N/mm2. [8]
ii) design a hollow shaft for the above compressor taking inner diameter as 0.6 times
the outer diameter. [4]
iii) calculate the percentage saving of material if the hollow shaft is used. [3]
iv) compare the stiffness of the two shafts. [2]
b) If the axial compressive load of 1020 N is applied to the hollow shaft , determine the shear
stress if the column factor is 1.2.
[4]
c) Comment on your answer to part (b) [4]

Question 3
a) Sketch a diagram of any named coupling and explain where it is preferably used. [7]
b)Explain the advantages of using flexible couplings. [6 ]
c)Design a muff coupling for a shaft transmitting 15Kw at 1000 rpm. The safe shear stress
for the plain carbon steel shaft is 50N/ mm2 and for the cast iron muff it is 12N/ mm2. The
allowable shear and crushing stresses for the key’s material are 40N/ mm2 and 80N/ mm2,
respectively. Design torque may be taken as 1.15 times the average torque. [13]

Question 4

a) Give three examples of light and medium duty keys and explain when they can be
best used. [9]
b) Design a square key for fixing a gear on the shaft which transmits 10KW power at
720 rpm. The shaft and the key are both made of plain carbon steel C45 of maximum
shear strength 69 N/mm2. Maximum crushing strength is 138N/mm2.
[16]

Question 5
a) Compare the advantages and disadvantages of a square power screw and Acme power
screw. [10]
b) A single square thread power screw is to raise a load of 60 KN. A screw thread of major
diameter of 34mm and a pitch of 6mm is used. The coefficient of friction at the thread and
the collar are 0.14 and 0.11 respectively. If the collar frictional diameter is 100mm and the
screw turns at a speed of 1.2 rev/second, find
i. the power input to the screw. [10]
ii. the combined efficiency of the screw and the collar. [5]

Question 6
a) Design a leaf spring for the rear axle of a tractor trolley. The load on the rear axle of the
trolley is 10 000 N. the span is 1200 mm and the width of the clamp is 100 mm. in all, 12
leaves are used out of which two are main leaves and the remaining graduated leaves.
