BPT Lesson Idea

This lesson plan aims to teach 1st grade students addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems. Students will partner up to explore adding and subtracting pieces of candy. They will then create addition and subtraction word problems within 20 using PowerPoint. Students will share their word problems on a class website and solve problems created by their peers. For higher-level students, word problems will use numbers up to 30. The lesson allows for multiple means of representation, expression and engagement through the use of technology.

Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Give Some, Take Some

Content Area/Grade(s): 1st grade math
Content Standard Summarized: I want students to be able to use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve
word problems.
MGSE1.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to,
taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using
objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.4

Technology Standard Addressed: Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a
variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital media appropriate to their goals.

Selected Technology Tool: PowerPoint

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. All products of learning are unique and
personalized. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator walking around monitoring the student-led
activity.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This tool is a great tool to implement in the classroom. It can reach every learner in the classroom as it has
multiple functions to allow students to cultivate the tool to reach their individual needs. This tool allows for
visual aids, text, closed captions in multiple languages, various fonts, and use of audio. Because of this, the
tool provides multiple means of engagement. Additionally, the functionality of this program provides a sound
design for all of the students. The tool I am using for this lesson is a great way to introduce a lesson topic. It
provides a fun way of introducing the material to the students. Additionally, the students will be able to
access the material outside of school in case they needed to reflect back to it.
Lesson idea implementation:
To introduce the topic, I will allow the students to partner up. I will give them 20 pieces of skittles. I will give
them time to explore dividing up the pieces and adding them back. We will then engage in a brief discussion
about their discoveries and any wonderings they might have. After the discussion, we will listen/read the
book. Students will then pair back up with their partners from the introduction part of the lesson. I will
explain to them again that we are exploring addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems. I will
explain to students that they get to create two word problems, one addition and one subtraction. They could
do this on anchor paper or on their tablet/iPad. Once they complete their word problems, they will create a

PowerPoint book like the one I shared at the beginning of the lesson. They will have the choice to design their
book however they like. Once it is completed, they will share the link to our class website. The students will
then take some time solving some of their peers word problems that they created.
I will extend this activity to my students who are at a higher proficiency level by allowing these students to
explore addition and subtraction word problems with numbers up to 30. These students will create at least
one word problem, either addition and subtraction, the uses numbers up to 30 along with their other two
that they are doing with their partner.
To conclude the lesson, we will engage in another discussion about addition and subtraction word problems
and talk about any possible misconceptions that were discovered during the activity.
Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson, I feel that the activities I created could positively impact the student learning. I
believe that activities in my lesson provides the students with multiple means of representation (PowerPoint
software), expression (creating their own word problems), and action and engagement (solving each other’s
word problems). To extend this lesson, students will be posting their word problems to our class website
where they will get to solve each other’s work. Additionally, this website is available for the parents so they
will be able to see what their students are working on during class.
