ENGG1310, 2020–2021 Second Term

Assignment 1 (due date: 10 Feb 2020 11:59pm)

Answer all questions. Show all steps of your derivations and reasoning.

1. Two particles are fixed on an x axis. Particle 1 of charge 20 μC is located at x = -1 cm; particle
2 of charge Q is located at x = 2 cm. Particle 3 of charge 10 μC is released from rest on the y
axis at y = 3 cm. What is the value of Q if the initial acceleration of particle 3 is in the positive
direction (a) the x axis; (b) the y axis? (10 points)

2. A nonconducting spherical shell, with an inner radius of 4 cm and an outer radius of 6 cm, has
charge spread nonuniformly through its volume between its inner and outer surfaces. The
volume charge density ρ is the charge per unit volume, with the unit coulomb per cubic meter.
For this shell ρ = b/r, where r is the distance in meters from the center of the shell and b = 3
μC/m2. (a) What is the net charge in the shell? (b-c) And what is the electric field at radius of 5
cm and 6 cm, respectively? (15 points)

3. The figure below shows a hollow disc in which an inner circular disc of radius R is cut out and
removed from a circular disc of radius 2R. Suppose that the charge density of the hollow disc
is σ. (20 points in total)
(a) Find the electric field at a distance x from the center of the disc (point P in the figure).
(b) Define the potential at x = 0 to be 0. What is the potential at x = d?

(c) Returning to part (a), show that at very large x, where x >> R, the E-field induced by the
𝑄
hollow disc is , where Q = σπ ((2R)2-R2). That is, the hollow disc appears like a point

charge of charge Q at a distance far away.

(d) Returning to part (b), show that when d is very large, the potential at d can be approximated
𝑄 𝜎𝑅
by − . oow come this potential does not appear like the potential of a point

charge at a distance faraway? Explain.

4. The figure below shows four configurations of two similar dipoles with length d, The centers
of the two dipoles are separated by distance r, where r > d. (a) compare the potential energy in
(1) and (2); (b) compare the potential energy in (3) and (4). Explain your answer. You can use
analytical argument, numerical analysis, or intuitive argument as long as your argument is
convincing. (10 points)

+q -q +q -q +q -q -q +q

(3) (4)

5. Consider two capacitors of capacitances C and 2C. (10 points)

(a) Suppose that a battery of V volts is connected to the two capacitors in series.
What are the potential differences across the two capacitors in terms of V after the capacitors are
fully charged (i.e. the potential differences 1 V and 2 V in the diagram below)? In addition, compute
the total energy stored in the two capacitors.

(b) With the fully charged capacitors as in part (a), now disconnect the battery and then connect the
two capacitors together to form a loop. What are the potential differences across the two capacitors
in terms of V (i.e., 1 V and 2 V in the diagram below)? In addition, compute the total energy stored
in the two capacitors. oow much energy has been lost compared with the total energy stored in part
(a)?

6. Consider a pyramid of four faces that are equilateral triangles. A charge of +q is located inside
the pyramid but very close to one of the four faces. What is the magnitude of the total electric
flux through the four faces? (5 points)

7. A solid sphere of radius a = 3 m is concentric with a spherical conducting shell of inner radius
b = 1.5a and outer radius c = 2a. The sphere has a net uniform charge of q = 1 μC; the shell has
a net charge q = 1 μC. What is the electric field at radial distances (a) r = 0, (b) r = a/3, (c) r =
a, (d) r = 1.25a, (e) r = 1.75a, (f) r = 2.5a? What is the net charge on the (g) inner and (h) outer
surface of the shell? (20 points)

8. Four charged particles of equal charge 1 μC are positioned at four corners of a square with sides
of 1 m. Derive the potential energy of this system of four particles. (10 points)
