 Be able to identify and explain characteristics of Baroque music.
 Visualize and write the contours of melodic pattern of the given piece
from the specified era.
 Be able to perform an excerpt of music from the Baroque era.

A. Presenting New Lesson
Activity: Listening
Directions: Write and Identify the contours of the first 30 seconds of this musical
piece from the baroque era.

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson


During the era of countless monarchies in the western part of the globe, music has
been an important part of the daily lives of people. Without modern technologies
to rely on to, it has become one of their primary sources of entertainment and also
a sign of statute in the society. Learning music from this era will give everyone an
idea of how people live during these times, Identify the drastic differences of their
music to modern day popular music, and why up until now most people consider
professions in music in pedestals as professions for the able.

Activity: Visualization
Directions: Listen to the piece from the earlier activity and visualize scenes while
hearing the music. Enlist all the items that you see that can relate to the baroque
era itself.

C. Presenting Examples/Instances of the new lesson


Activity: Clap the rhythm
Directions: Listen and follow the rhythmic pattern of this musical piece in its first
25 seconds in the video by clapping your hands along with the music.

D. Discussion
MUSIC OF THE BAROQUE ERA
The word baroque iss derived from the Portuguese word “barroco”, means
“pearl of irregular shape”. During this time, the arts highlighted Grandiose and
elaborate ornamentations that were clearly evident in the musical compositions by
Baroque composers.
Certain instrumental forms developed during this era, namely concertos, concerto
grosso, suites, toccatas and fugues. Vocal forms also flourished in this era, such as
Cantatas, Chorales and Oratorios.
Characteristics of Music from the Baroque Era:
Melody
Melodies were ornamental and elaborate, so it was not easy to sing, play or
remember.
Texture
Contrapuntal textures were widely used, and sometimes being homophonic as
well.
Forms
Binary and ternary forms have been introduced and developed during this era.

E. Performance
Activity: Listen, Read and Sing Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah using a
vocal section you are comfortable with. (First 5 Measures only.)

F. Finding Practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living


As we have learned, music has a lot to say about influencing the composers of
today. The ability of organized sounds affects the different domains of a person
which include our thinking ability and even beliefs such as religious functions of
music as well as physiological aspects.

Activity:
Select a clip from a movie and mix it with a piece of baroque music, then make a
reaction paper on how it affected the clip you chose.

G. Additional activities to supplement knowledge


Activity:
Form a group of 4 with complete voice sections. Record yourselves singing the
first 5 measure of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus and compile it as one video,
singing altogether.
