Practical Training 02

This document outlines two structural dynamics problems to be solved by a group. Problem 1 involves calculating the peak lateral displacement and maximum bending moment of a one-story building subjected to a lateral pulse load. Problem 2 involves determining and plotting the dynamic response history using classical and Newmark time-stepping methods for a single-degree-of-freedom system with given mass, stiffness, damping, and analysis time. The group is to provide solutions for both problems in the document.

Problem 1 (40%) P(t) W
Consider a one story building of two columns of height 3.6 m, which are

3.6 m
hinged to the foundation. The beam floor is considered very rigid. The
EIc-x EIc-x
period of vibration of building is 0.5 s. Each column has moment of inertia
about bending axis Ix = 2576 cm4, and elastic modulus of E =2100 t/cm2. y
Frame is subjected to lateral rectangular pulse of amplitude 1.8 t and
duration of 0.1 s.
6.0 m
a. Check the validity of short pulse, and then estimate an approximate
value for peak lateral displacement of floor P(t)
b. Calculate maximum bending moment in each column 1.8

Problem 2 (60%)
P(t) W P(t) W
The shown SDDOF model has lumped mass m = 25.272 kg and lateral stiffness u(t)
k = 1000N/m. Consider damping ratio ζ = 5%. Determine and plot dynamic u(t)
response history for analysis time of 3.0 seconds via Excel using: u(t)
a. Classical method of load discretization with linear interpolation k,c k,c
