Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Plants, You, and Me

Content Area/Grade(s): 1st grade Science
Content Standard Summarized: With this lesson, students should be familiar with different parts of a plant
and their functions.
Technology Standard Addressed: Students will be using PowerPoint to learn about plants through an e-
book environment.

Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft PowerPoint

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. All products of learning are unique and
personalized. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator walking around monitoring the student-led
activity.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The e-book/ PowerPoint is able to help students who are visual
learners. Additionally, by adding audio, this will help with students who do better with listening to lessons.
Additionally, because it is through a computer, students can replay and pause the e-book. Lastly, by having
subtitles, those who have difficulty hearing and those who have difficulty with English can better access the
information.
Lesson idea implementation: After watching and reading the e-book, I will have students label the different
parts of a plant on a picture I provide. This will allow them to really see if they understand different parts of a
plant. We will then go over it as a class, and I will answer any questions the students may have. Additionally, I
will put students into small groups and have them create an e-book. They will each be assigned a part of a
plant to draw and compare it to another item. The comparison item does not have to be related to a human
nor does it have to be related to a living object.

Reflective Practice: I believe the students will really enjoy this e-book lesson. Additionally, I think having
students individually work on a worksheet, followed by a group discussion will be very beneficial to the
learning of the students.
