Chapter 1 Overview

1. Overview of equipment
1) This unit is an international VHF radiotelephone of 25W containing a watch receiver of
class D DSC, and CH70, conforming to the pan-European Standard (EN 301 025).

2) The equipment basically consists of a handset with a bracket and a main body.
Up to 2 handsets can be connected, and intercom between them is allowed.

3) Rated power input is 12 VDC (+30%, -10%). (150M-W2VN)

(OPTION)

4) Remote handset is available in two types; A and B. The bracket for the handset type A has
a distress calling button and a power switch. Type A has higher priority over type B
optional. The type A is normally fitted at a steering position.

5) When an antenna is connected to “ANT” connector, the VHF transmitter/receiver and the
CH 70 watch receiver use the antenna in common. In this connection, CH 70 cannot be
received during the transmission of the VHF. In order to receive CH 70 while transmitting
in VHF, optional CH70 antenna and its connector must be equipped.

6) MMSI, position, and time data contained in DSC distress signal received can be output by
TLL signal.

1-1
1 Overview of equipment

7) Calling function
- Calling message can be registered up to 25 channels beforehand, and registered
message can be read out and transmitted.
- In creating a DSC message to call a ship’s station, enter the MMSI number of the
other party and communication channel number. In entering a communication
channel, provide a display of channels usable between ships, and choose one from
them.

8) Distress alarm function

- Alarm can be issued by the pressing [DISTRESS] button. This button can be
clearly identified, protected by a cover with spring to prevent transmission of a
false distress.
- Nature of distress can be chosen before issuing an alarm. When it is not chosen,
“Unspecified distress” is automatically selected.
- In issuing an alarm, hold down the button longer than 3 seconds. When the issue of
distress alarm is started, it is indicated by visible and audible alarm.
- Issue of alarm takes priority over every operation. It automatically changes to CH
70 and is sent by maximum output. If acknowledgment of the distress alarm is not
received, it is automatically sent again at an interval of 3.5 to 4.5 minutes.
Automatic transmission is canceled when the [CANCEL] key is pressed.
- When transmission of the alarm is finished, the VHF automatically changes to CH
16, allowing transmission at the maximum output. The CH 70 RX board receives
the acknowledgment of the distress alarm from a land station.

9) Receiving function
- When the handset is kept “ON HOOK”, a communication channel is automatically
selected as soon as all ships or group calling message is received. Further, when
individual calling message is received and acknowledgment returned manually, the
communication channel is automatically selected.
- When distress or urgency message is received, VHF channel automatically changes
to CH16, allowing transmission at maximum output.

10) Control function

- TX, ordinary, and distress logs can be stored up to “50” respectively. Unread
received message is indicated by an unread mark.
- Re-calling is allowed from LOG.
- Program can be updated with a PC. See Chapter 4 for detail.

Chapter 2 Description of block

1. Overview of each board

Operation can be made from the handset. A communication command is sent to the transceiver
unit by RS-422 serial interface from the handset.
For example, the result of key switch operation is sent to HOST CPU on the CONT board in the
transceiver unit by CPU on the HS CONT board provided in the handset.
HOST CPU provides control corresponding to such operation. HS CPU and HOST CP
communicates every second when no operation is being made.

2.3 TX/RX and CH-70 RX Circuit

Block diagram of T/RX and CH 70 RX circuit in the transceiver is simply shown below.
Optionally, a receiving antenna can be connected to [CH70 RX ANT] so that you can receive
CH70 during VHF communication. Wiring inside the transceiver unit must be changed when
the CH70 RX ANT connector is used.
Transmission frequency and output power can be adjusted on the TX/RX board. See page 5-6 for
detail.

・Transmission frequency: Adjusted at ±10 ppm (±1.5 kHz) by C528.

・Output power: Adjusted at 25W by R331.
