you learned by doing the Activity 1.1.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

(OHS) POLICY
- is a planned system of working to prevent illness and injury where you
work by recognizing and identifying hazards and risks.

What are the difference between Hazard and Risk?

• When we say Hazard it harm or adverse
health effects on something or someone under
certain conditions at work. While Risk is the
chance or probability that a person will be
harmed or experience an adverse health effect
if exposed to a hazards.
https://www.google.com/search?q=example+of+hazard+and+risk
Each student has a responsibility to their colleagues and their organization
to report and act upon any potential workplace hazard. Students need to be
aware of the type of hazards that are possibly present in their work
environment.
Procedure
1. Identify the hazard
2. Clear the area close to the hazard
3. Partition the hazard off or clearly identify the area to protect
other people from harm
4. If the hazard is easily and safely cleared, then do so

If not…
5. Report the hazard to the appropriate person (such as teacher in
charge, principal etc.) to obtain assistance
6. Following clearing of the hazard fill out the correct documentation
to assist in identifying improved practice to reduce further incidence of
hazards.

All hazards must be reported using Accidental Report form. This enables
us to track the kinds of hazards we have in our workplace, and take
action where necessary to make it safer for all student and clients.

Accident reports
Forms are used to give specific details with regards to the accidents
happened in the laboratory during experiments. Accident reports contain
the following details:
 Name of the person injured
 Date and time of the accident
 Type of injury
 First aid given
 Action taken to prevent further accidents

Fire Safety Procedure
Each work area has a designated fire warden, who in the event of a fire will
take charge. They are recognized by the wearing of a red hard hat.

If you find the fire

 Assess the danger prior to doing anything.
 If it is safe to move assist anyone in the vicinity of the fire away from
danger.
 If it is possible close the door to the fire area.
 Call for assistance. Verbally call FIRE, FIRE, in a loud and clear voice.
 Break the glass section of the fire alert call point.
 Call to the switch; ensure you know where the fire is, any other details
that may be of assistance to the fire brigade. Details could be size of the
fire, cause or type of fire, any people hurt or trapped, has anyone tried to
put it out.
 If safe to do so, attack the fire with the correct extinguisher or fire hose.

If the designated fire officer is not present, someone quickly needs to

take responsibility and:
1. Locate the source of the fire.
2. Locate any people.
3. Remove all people from the building.
4. Once outside do a head count?
5. Notify the authorities.

Personal Safety While Working with PC’s

Computer equipment can be dangerous, and you or others can be
injured or even killed if you don’t follow proper safety guidelines when working
along with PC’s. The following are some precautionary measures to take before
working with any computer equipment:
 Wear shoes with non-conductive rubber soles to help reduce the
chance of being shocked or seriously injured in an electrical accident.

What Do You Need to Know?

Read Lesson 1.2 very well then find out how much you can remember and how much
you learned by doing the Activity 1.2.

A computer is a programmable device that stores, retrieves, and processes

data. The term "computer" was originally given to humans (human computers)
who performed numerical calculations using mechanical calculators, such as
the abacus and slide rule.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE

Hardware and software are the two basic parts of a computer system.
Computer Hardware
Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer. Computer
Hardware is any part of the computer that we can touch. These are the primary
electronic devices used to build up the computer.
Example of hardware in a computer are:
 Monitor
 Printer
 Keyboard
 Mouse
 System Unit

Computer Software
Software is a collection of instructions procedures, documentation that
performs different task on a computer system. It is the intangible parts of a
computer, where you cannot touch.
Example of software in a computer are:

 Games
 Facebook
 Instagram
 Microsoft offices.

EXTERNAL COMPONENTS OF THE COMPUTER

External devices are added to the computer system by plugging
them into one of the ports on the back of the computer.
1. Monitor - used to display video and graphical information.
2. Mouse - can move and select text, icons, files and folders.
3. Printer – it transforms a soft copy into hard copy. Machines for

INTERNAL COMPONENTS OF THE COMPUTER

Internal components are devices that are either built-in to the
motherboard of the computer, added on an expansion card or a device attached
to the motherboard by way of ribbon cables.

Below are the list of internal hardware or hardware that is found inside your
computer and may be found in a computer.

1. System Unit- The main part of a microcomputer, sometimes called the

chassis. It includes the following parts: Motherboard, Microprocessor,
Memory Chips, Buses, Ports, Expansion Slots and Cards.

2. Motherboard / Mainboard / System Board- The main circuit board of a
computer. It contains all the circuits and components that run the
computer.

Ref: Kto12 Module in TLE ICT grade 9 https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/computerbasics/inside-a-

3. Central Processing Unit (CPU) - also called a processor, is located

inside the computer case on the motherboard. It is sometimes called
the brain of the computer, and its job is to carry out commands.
Whenever you press a key, click the mouse, or start an application,
you're sending instructions to the CPU.

The CPU is usually a two-inch ceramic square with a silicon chip located
inside. The chip is usually about the size of a thumbnail. The CPU fits into the
motherboard's CPU socket, which is covered by the heat sink, an object that
absorbs heat from the CPU.
A processor's speed is measured in megahertz (MHz), or millions of
instructions per second; and gigahertz (GHz), or billions of instructions per
second. A faster processor can execute instructions more quickly. However, the
actual speed of the computer depends on the speed of many different
components—not just the processor.

Ref: Kto12 Module in TLE ICT grade 9

4. Primary storage- (internal storage, main memory or memory) is the

computer's working storage space that holds data, instructions for
processing and processed data (information) waiting to be sent to
secondary storage. Physically, primary storage is a collection of
RAM chips.
Two (2) Types of Memory
a. ROM – (Read Only Memory) A ROM chip is a non-volatile storage
medium, which means it does not require a constant source of power to
retain the information stored on it. ROM is meant for permanent storage

b. RAM – (Random Access Memory) RAM chip is volatile, which means it

loses any information it is holding when the power is turned off. RAM is for
temporary storage.

Ref: Kto12 Module in TLE ICT grade 9 https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/computerbasics/inside-a-

5. Expansion Bus - Alternatively known as an address bus, data

bus, or local bus, a bus is a connection between components or
devices connected to a computer. For example, a bus carries data
between a CPU and the system memory via the motherboard.

https://en.wikipedia.org/ https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/computerbasics/inside-a-

6. Adapters- Printed-circuit boards (also called interface cards) that

enable the computer to use a peripheral device for which it does not have
the necessary connections or circuit boards. They are often used to
permit upgrading to a new different hardware.

Sound Card Graphics Card Network Card

Sound Card is a device which can be slotted into a computer to allow the use
of audio components for multimedia applications.
Graphics Card is a type of display adapter or video card installed within most
computing devices to display graphical data with high clarity, color, definition
and overall appearance. A graphics card provides high-quality visual display by
processing and executing graphical data using advanced graphical techniques,
features and functions.
Network Interface Card connects your computer to a local data network or
the Internet. The card translates computer data into electrical signals it sends
through the network; the signals are compatible with the network so
computers can reliably exchange information.
7. Power Supply Unit - is a hardware component of a computer that
supplies all other components with power. The power supply converts a
110-115 or 220-230 volt AC (alternating current) into a steady low-
voltage DC (direct current) usable by the computer and rated by the
number of watts it generates.
