Plant Sciences Ii Class - Assignment # 2: Semester Iii

This document provides information about a Plant Sciences II class assignment on the process of cellular division. It includes the names and registration numbers of the students in Group 6 who are assigned the topic. It then describes the two main types of cellular division - amitosis/binary fission which produces two identical daughter cells and occurs in single-celled organisms, and mitosis which produces genetically identical daughter cells and occurs in multicellular organisms. It outlines the key stages of each process.

Cellular division:
It is a process in which the parental cell divides into two or more daughter cell. It occurs in
multicellular organisms, and unicellular ones (usually during respiration). It usually occurs as a
part of larger cell division. This process serves various functions, like growth, repair and
reproduction.
It has the following types:

1. Amitosis (Binary fission): This type of division occurs in single celled organisms like
paramecium, Euglena, Amoeba, Bacillus subtilis, etc. It involves the following steps:
1. The cell duplicates it`s DNA contents. It synthesizes new organelles and increases its
cytoplasmic contents.
2. The new chromosomes migrate and moves to the opposite pole. The cell elongates.
3. New cell wall form and divides the cell. The chromosomes also segregate in the
middle. Two daughter cells are formed, with the copy of the parental DNA and
necessary organelles.

2. Mitosis: This type of division occurs in multicellular organisms. It produces daughter

cells with the same genetic makeup as the parental cell. It consists of the following
steps:
1. Interphase: The cell grows in size, duplicates its chromosomes, and synthesizes
necessary enzymes.
2. Prophase: The chromosome condenses and become visible. Spindle fiber also forms.
3. Metaphase: The nuclear membrane disappears. The spindle fiber attached with the
chromosomes at the kinetochore. The chromosome aligns themselves and forms the
meta-plate.
4. Anaphase: The spindle fiber shortens and pulls the chromosomes apart.
5. Telophase: Nuclear membrane begins to reform. The chromosomes move to the
opposite poles and condense. They then re-condense. The spindle fiber begins to
break down.
6. Cytokinesis: The cell walls and cell membrane forms. The two daughter cells
separate. Each containing same amount of chromosomes as in the parental cell.
